I personally think the way that the book has been translated onto film was exceptionally excelent! Ooooh... Big words... Though I have read the books, enjoyed them, and would defend them against critique, I still think what they did was good. There was TOO much information given in the book that could not be transfered onto the film at the same moments, or events that would seem coherent to the reader, but to the viewer would seem something out of a Lynch movie. I love it how they mostly just filmed all of the relevant and important scenes and character developments and just sprinkled throughout the movie, all of the trivia that JRR Tolkier wrote in the books. Like the whole love scene. Its not in the book, true, but it is mentioned in the Appendices.

But in the end, this movie is what it is... A movie... Not intended for LOTR fans, but for the general public. Yes, it has stuff in it to delight the LOTR fans, but in the end its sole purpose is to tell the story to a public who can't be bothered in reading the book.

don't get me wrong. I am a true fan of tLotR, I've read about everything Tolkien wrote, evven the adventures of tom bombadil and others obscure books. BUT I think Jackson did the best it was humanly possible to do with today's means. The movie is quite complete, and it's already very long. I understand most of the artistic choices ( saruman's increased importance in this first chapter coz you need a bad guy in such a movie, Arwen/Aragorn romance coz US movies must have that , etc etc ) even if I don't like them ( who had the big idea of turning the Uruk hai into goblin/orc breed, when they were more frightening as orc/human breed? ). Anyway, I gotta see what will be added oin the fdirector's cut version ( 30 more minutes, yeah! ). I heard the Lothlorien part was longer ( maybe the scene of the gifts? ).

I got that DVD set. Actually, PJ doesen't like calling it "The Director's Cut" cause he liked the version put out to the theaters, but in his commentary, he seemed more happy with this one as well.

I do have to say that 30 mins does make the movie OH SO MUCH BETTER! There's tons of stuff added here and there. Mostly little 5 minute things, or extended stuff, really. Battles are longer and more violent, and more character developement. AND, the only missgivings I had about the theatrical version was that there was NO gift giving sequence which plays a rather important part in the other two movies. Anyway, in the Extended edition, this scene is included! YEE!!! Its really good! And theres also a different opening to the movie which I absolutely love. So, if anything, I suggest everyone to buy it, it made an awesome movie even better! Not to mention the great commenteries and the extremely cool 2 DVDs worth of extras! Gotta love DVD...

save from the gift scene, no extra scene, just extended ones? I didn't hope for Bombadil, but, you know... :nervous: :(
I hope they'll do the same with the two other movies :p ( coz they can't possibly put a 3.30 movie in theatre, I'd go look at it, but many people wouldn't ).

There are some other extra scenes too. A whole new intro is given. Well, basically after Galadriel gives her little history lesson, in the theatrical version we cut to Frodo reading a book under a tree with the title appearing on the screen. Well thats been changed to a while 5 minute piece where Bilbo starts writing his book and explains about the daily life of a hobbit before once again cutting to Frodo. Excelent scene. Theres also a scene at Elrond's place where Aragorn is cleaning up his mothers grave, saying farewell I presume, before departing. Some scenes were added with Aragorn and Boromir. A scene was added later on in Lorien, when the fellowship get caught by the elves. Theres a new scene between them and aragorn arguing before finally being accepted into Lorien. There are quite a bit of added scenes. But small ones. Then theres the nice share of extended ones.

I also forgot to mention that the commentaries also ROCKED! The cast one is great, but so is the Peter Jackson and crew commentary. His explenation about the cave troll is so good, it really made me feel sorry for the cave troll in the end. :(

And sorry, no Bombadil... :(

They are going to do it for the next ones as well. They heaven't said it outright, but theres enough hard evidence to prove it. First, members who join the Official LOTR movie fan club can get they're names on the end credits for all three movies. Since this wasn't on the original DVD and only on the extended, then presumably they're names for the next movies will ALSO be in the extended editions. Then the DVD box cover looks like a volume from a book collection that would seem to be a part of three. And then through out the commenteries they give little hints that they'll be returning to give another commentary for the next movies. And since they're commentaries weren't on the original DVD, then again it points towards other extended editions. So I can't wait. :D

Yeah, after they depart, theres Gollum floating on a log, following them. And Boromir and Aragorn discuss a bit about him.

I also forgot that theres the "gimli Falling in love" scene and a fun little thing about Lembas way bread.

You mean the battle of Helm's Deep. Some trivia for you:

Helm's Deep took four months to film.

A new kind of crowd management technology was created just for the sequence.

The battle is over 45 minutes long.

The stuntmen recieved t-shirts saying "I survived Helm's Deep" (and quite frankly, I want one).
