Ok I just put Windows XP Service Pack (fix 10 bugs, add 20 more bugs, take up even more space...) and Freespace 2 now plays really quickly.  I mean taken way too many drugs quickly.  It was fun for a while but now it sucks.

Probably need a few more of your system specs.

Ok sure

PIII 1Ghz
1GB Ram
20GB HD
Some Gigabyte motherboard
Gefore 256 PRO (the original GeForce ooooo)

Doubt it has much to do with the components though but cheers anyway.  Its ammusing because SP1 fixes a whole load of other DirectX games that ran too slowly!

Its not graphics drivers either - tried quite a few different versions but no help.

I will try DX 9 see if this gives a solution.

Thanks for effort.

Cornwall - you got loads of snow there too (I'm in Kent)

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling of FS2? Do you have applied latest FS2 patch (1.2)?

This was a nice fresh install with SP1 and FreeSpace 2 (V1.2).  A nice dedicated PC just for Freespace (well it is now anyway).

I didn't notice a difference at all.  Maybe you had some configuration problems that SP1 fixed.

Sure did. :D First time since 1987.

it's strange. WinXP SP1 isn't suppose to modify a file that allow FS to play correctly

you possibly hited something in FS settings...just check your settings.

or as Fetty said, you possibly cought a virus...i'll stay tuned on that topic

Well I did a nice reinstall yesterday night and have slowly applied each update in turn -> V1.2 -> Updated NVidea Drivers -> Updated Soundcard Drivers... and everything is still ok.  Next I'll put SP1 on and see if it changes the speed of the game...but tonights beer night!

you shouldn't install SP1...if your comp runs ok, don't install it

Although I appreciate where you are coming from installing updates such as Service Packs is in general very important.  By not installing upgrades you are storing up problems for later and so I don't think that is sound advice.

Actually WXP SP1 has caused more problems than solved for some people. M$ quality assurance got lazy.

No. You should install a Service Pack only if you have a serious problem that it fixes. Security updates are always available separately. Mr. Fury was right in that many installs of SP1 caused more trouble than they fixed - for example, on my PC.

Lets not get too involved in the SP1 argument interesting as it is and I do respect that opinion.

Over the weekend I put on the Service Pack, and, as per the original problem, the game now runs twice as fast.  Then I took it back off - game goes back to the correct speed.

Anyone care to speculate whats in there thats causing this.  I did try reinstalling the graphics card drivers and DirectX after the service pack but this did not help.

we're only trying to help you out atatham. I recommend you to not install SP1. You know that a driver (or anything) in SP1 is causing this speed trouble. Is SP1 is really needed for you?
