bnew guy needs a bit of help.
I am brand new to Freespace. Is there a tutorial out there about adding or replacing ships and weapons?

Just table editing?

Get VPView from www.descent-network.com  , extract weapons.tbl to the "Freespace2\data\tables" directory. Open with wordpad or look for Joey's Table editor thingy.

The tables themselves are pretty self-explanatory. They even have explanations. New effects go in the \data\effects folder.

Just play around with the tables, that's pretty much the only way to learn.

For ships you extract ships.tbl. That's rather easy as well. Hitpoints, speed, weapons, simple stuff like that can be changed. Some more complicated stuff, like adding weapons firepoints and stuff, you need a POF editor, like Kazans POF CS or the ModelView from Descent-Network.

If you want to make brand new models, that's a much trickier thing to do.

Um...this is Freespace 1 I'm dealing with here. Does this information still apply?

From your description, it sounds a LOT like modifying Starfleet Command, which was pretty easy as far as specifying geometry and ship capabilities/weapons/cost/etc.

Also, where can I find some models to D/L? I've been looking around here and so far some of them look hella cool.

Yes - altering Fs1 and 2 is virtually identical - but ships are either made for FS1 or Fs2 - they won't work in both.  Check Freespcce watches archives; http://archives.volitionwatch.com

for some - I believe HLP also has some, but I think that the mod section is still being re-done.

Oh, right. Well, yes. Everything is basically the same. Just can't use Kazan's POF CS, then.

Table editing is very easy, but when modeling and texturing a ship from scratch is a completely different matter. First the model in your favourite modeler, then using TrueSpace for texturing and hierarchy, then converting it to POF, then making engine glows, docking paths, weapons, turrets. Then there's the table editing, which is the easy part

Table editing is the easy part, but it's a good place to start - it's basically altering the properties of existing ships, so that for example you can RAM THEM UNTIL THEY GIVE UP at 500m/s with 100,000 hitpoints.
