The apollo in the FS1 opening cut scene

Well, it is an Apollo bomber varient. Since I'm the head of the Terran-Vasudan War Project, I guess i can fill you in.

Originally the Apollo was going to be a bomber by :v:. If you look closely in the second LOD, instead of gun mounts, you see missile slots.

For the TVWP, that bomber is the Apollyon. It is a standard bomber, sort of a predecessor to the Medusa.

I thought he was just trying to be clever and have it be like apollo, but still be a real god.. the name is.. meh.

Abbadon = better, but more Shivan (like the ship name)

Wouldn't it be great if the backseater could talk to you, or your wingman?

It'd be like StarLancer, then. With your co-pilot shouting at you, and taking over the controls iif you fire on friendly ships.

Thank you for being so postive.  And considering WE ALREADY HAVE THAT PROBLEM AND IT'S CALLED COMMAND, I can understand your concern.

"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration."
"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration."
"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration."
"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration."
"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration."

and so on until you run screaming outside, stark naked.

APOLLYON: "Destroyer" in ancient Greek.
As a Greek myself and actually quite good at ancient Greek, well apollyon means "the destroyer" or to be more to the point, "the one who absolves from bondage".

So basically Apollyon means "liberator".

If spelled correctly (tone on -y-) it sounds good too.

If you want to be ready for Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, then download and play the prologue first.

Here,

Then, while waiting for the Darkest dawn, Download Starshatter 4.02

You 'll understand why once you have.

I'm always positive. And yes, Command is just as bad. Why make it worse?
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Surely if you did it right, the back seater wouldn't dupilicate Command. For instance:

Shivan Cruiser X jumps in and starts attacking the diabled Fenris H with it's beam cannons. The backseater is gunner/weapons-type person.

Command: The X has arrived, it's attacking the H!
Backseat: Okay flight-leader, lets take down those beam cannon's before you lose the H.
Alpha 2: We're with you Alpha 1.

How maybe with this admittly poor piece of dialogue I may have just disproved the point I was trying to make. However a backseater wouild be used just as a regular wingman rather than a second Command. It'd also be good for those admittly rare times when you're out of communications with Command.
