Well this is embarrasing but it appears I got it wrong in the tutorial. Although the turrets I made track the enemy quite well and fire quite nicely if you blunder into them the game falls over.

Worse yet I can`t figure out what the hell I`m doing wrong. Here's how I made the turrets.

1) Make a Cube.

2) Make a second cube that sits on almost on top of the first but is indented a little bit.

3) Click on the Move Axis to centre button for both boxes

4) Move the axes down for the top box.

5) Attach lights to both boxes

6) Call the first set Turret01

7) Call the second set Turret01-arm

8) Attach the Turret arm to the base.

I`ll be buggered if I can figure out what's wrong with that set up especially as I`ve just spent 2 hours messing about with it slightly to see if I could make them work and still not crash when I bump into them. I`ve tried the pofs on another computer just in case it's just that my copy of FS2 is screwed but the result is exactly the same. If anyone knows what the hell I`m doing wrong please pipe up.  

If that doesn`t give enough detail try this file which contains the pof and cob.

*goes off to contemplate a career in pig farming where I won`t have to touch another computer ever again*

EDIT: Now how on Earth did this topic end up here? I`m sure I put it in Modding. I guess some days nothing goes right!

It's not textured. Add a basic cubic map of capital01-01a or something, see if that helps.

Tried it. Absolutely no help. The really wierd thing is the crashes seem to happen somewhat randomly. Sometimes they happen only when I crash into the turret and barrel and sometimes it doesn`t matter where I hit the turret.

EDIT : Can some one try the pof in the game. That would at least tell me if it's a model or table problem.

So one box is for the base, one is for the barrel (turret arm as you call it) right ?
If that's the case, why do you need two lights ?

I do the same with only one light all the time and it always works.

I posted a simple tutorial on FSCult a while ago about my way of turreting (nothing special).

The crashes may also be caused by some bounding box issue.
I'll try your POF when I get home.
Just fly on !

Nope. With one light it crashes in exactly the same way (I`ve just tried it)

Have you got a link to that tutorial of yours?

Also if someone can lend me the cob file for a ship they know works I can try pinching a turret from that and see if it's cause I`m doing something wrong when I convert it. Be sure that your ship is crash proof though cause I thought mine worked fine until I accidently blundered into a turret (crashes tend to occur whenever I hit the intersection between turret and barrel).

To be honest I`d prefer a user made ship cause V have made some shocking mistakes themselves :)

Anyway It doesn`t matter as I found the old asteroid gun from a few weeks back and that had the cob files so I`ll try with that.

Can`t see any real differences between it and the turrets on my own Styx and Charon capships but if all else fails I can simply nick them and edit. Does mean I`ll have to pull the tutorial though which would be a big shame.

Yes. Something is wrong with the object hierarchy. Don't use two lights there. Unglue the whole model, delete one light.
Move the axes of both the base and barrel into the same position (preferably where you would like the barrel to turn around). Move one light into the same position.
Select the light. Glue as sibling to barrel, name this combo as Arm (or whatewer). Glue combo to base, name new combo as Turret02. Order of glueing is important.
Thats all. It should work.
I've also noticed that TS3.2 changes Select Axis mode to Normalize Size mode whenever you select anoher object.
This may cause trouble, 'cos the two icons are almost the same.

Also the axis position of  your Arm object was too high. This will cause the back side of the arm sometimes pop out from the base. I would put the axis at the bottom of the arm.

Thanks for that grunt. I`ll give that a try later but strangely enough I seem to have solved the problem by renaming the geometry objects. I can`t understand why that should possibly make a difference but it appears that it did.

I`ll try it your way though and if that works I`ll put it that way in the tutorial.

I couldn't get the turrets right, either, and had to get Sarny to fix it! I had tried for about a day in TS, and nearly went insane.
