I've been fiddling around with some active asteroid fields, and noticed a few things you should be aware of.

1.) Turrets will not fire at asteroids. I'm escorting a Fenris through an asteroid field, and it won't shoot at the asteroids hat are heading right for it. Please to be fixing of this.

2.) Could you set it so fighters will not use aspect-seeking missiles on asteroids? You can't gain aspect lock on them, so neither should the AI. Also, it's wasteful.

3.) What happens when you remove an escort ship from your escort list in an asteroid field? Do the asteroids still actively 'target' it? What if you add a ship to your escort list? Does it become more vulnerable than normal?

I'll post these in Bugzilla later. Any thoughts by the coders?

Good idea. I always thought something was missing from those escort missions, and there are cases when you might want to have a capship in an asteroid field without it letting itself get blown to bits.

A bit of a waste of time. After all, it's rare that you'll notice, and in a mission where they're targeting asteroids they probably should have time to rearm before getting into actual combat.

I don't think asteroids ever actively do anything. The generator might or might not throw more asteroids in the general direction of the ship if it's an escort, but I've always seen a fairly even distribution all through the field. It's just that capital ships are big and unwieldy, and thus would naturally end up more likely to be hit by a few dozen rocks in a dense field.

They do, as a matter of fact.  I doubted this myself until I saw an asteroid swerve to hit a ship the other day.

Coooooool.

I wanna get me some heat-seeking asteroids! Maybe get a fastish ship, a fighter or something on the escort list, watch the asteroids chase it all the way through.:D
