Just got this in my e-mail. Read it:

PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY BELOW !

IMPORTANT WARNING:

Please Be Extremely Careful Especially if using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail and so on. This information arrived this morning, from Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who accesses the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless email with a Power Point presentation "Life is beautiful. pps" If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and delete it immediately. If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful", subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN

YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, E-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. WE NEED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO STOP THIS VIRUS:
AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus Softs are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself "life owner", PLEASE MAKE A COPY OF THIS EMAIL AND SEND TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS

Thanks for the warning...

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

Oh yeah a hoax. Do you have proof? Right. Who told ya that it's a hoax? Your grandmother?
And one more thing, when you become an admin in this place and IF you even become an admin, you may close this, untill then, this stays and I am not making a hoax here, I am just doing a good deed by warning people about dangers.

I'm inclined to agree with kasperl on this one. It screams hoax to me.
Anyway, they oughta get their terminology right - .pps is a powerpoint show, not a presentation ^_^ And I thought that you were warned about Vbasic macros before it ran them? Even if the file does exist, it's probably just a lame powerpoint show with the mentioned message and a no-stop-until-esc property. I'm sure that'd scare a lot of dumb people.

EDIT: Microsoft reporting a 'virus'? ha! - That's probably the bit screaming hoax... And what about Synmatec and all those antivirus guys? Whoever wrote this just chose the most commonly known company, Norton. And for some reason Microsoft as well.

Yeah. Unless it's a clever person with an uninterrupted power supply box thingie. Then calling tech support would be okay. I don't think anyone even considering calling tech support would be that evolved though :)

Ah, but this thread _is_ still on topic. It started out on the theme of idiocy, and continues to be so.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
