Get rid of all the ambient lighting - sun, moon, and stars - and the planet. Leave the hull spolights and the beamglows. I wanna see what a difference it makes.
Alternatively, you could make the planet lit almost completely from behind, a crescent, with the sun positioned just barely off-screen. That'll provide some nice lighting angles. Or just have the planet eclipse the sun, with a glowing ring of atmosphere around it, and the ship lit up by the beams and nothing else.
