The Who's online window
I have an idea, that I hope wouldn't be a great and expensive business to do:

I think many of us like the 'Who's online' window. Wouldn't it be possible to make a chat room for those who are not browsing the forum, only waiting have their question asked?

Just for fun, I think it would be good to have a stuff like that.

Bad idea. For many reasons.

It's very hard to moderate a chat room. Anyone would say anything, and people would sign up as members just to start gossiping about their girl/boyfriends... :-/

Why don't you just go sit in #nodewar in mIRC and watch the Who's Online in IE. Much simpler.

Because instead of looking at who else is posting, you could be posting yourself? I dunno, maybe I'm just odd.

Well it's useful to find out who, if anyone, is viewing a thread you've just started.

It'd be rather easy to implement, but pointless. The board is basically a slow chat. BTW: why the who's online in particular?
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

because it came to my mind first as where a chat room would be good, at forums, you can write anywhere and anywho you want.

The board is, like Kamikazie said, a slow chat, but with one important factor: past posts are viewable.

This feature by itself is why forums are so much more cohesive a place to communicate than chat rooms are.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Hey! #nodewar is very cohesive.

We've assimulatized the WS IRC people, as well as having the normal NW rabble.

Yeah, but anyone who joins the channel can't get any sort of feel for the history of the place, now can he? :doubt:

Both have their uses, but it seems to me that in a place which is fairly slow by necessity (members scattered throughout time zones), a more 'concrete' type forum is more suitable. I'd stick with this and just keep ICQ or Trillian open, seems workable to me. :)
