xsi, maya3d and 3dsmax have a limited free version of the main (expensive) program: xsi and maya work only with w2000 or higher(or linux), gmax and maya (or so I think) save in a limited number of uncommon formats, so you will have to spend sometime in converting files before you can use them
blender is free (but I think there are often problems with models made with blender), milkshape is cheap, rhino is cheap, truespace have a "cheap" (199$ iirc) version (that I think is based upon the last versions of the main program), designed for game modelling. Don't know of other free/cheap progs
oh, and I'd like to learn lightwave too:)
btw, if you are still free, a texturer could be very useful in our team (althought I don't think we have many ready unskinned models at the moment, but this isn't a big prob), if you want to give a look at what we are doing, this is our forum:)
