Experimenting with some new techniques
And those new techniques took me a good 1 1/2 hours to render

Perfect.

Except you didn't bumpmap or specmap any of the textures. If I'm gonna be that close to the ribbing and tiles of the Sobek they had better have some depth and lighting, bub. :p

What program is that, anyway? It's impressive. And I want to learn how to render.

Sweet. The effects rock. You should post a general how-to.

Minor quibbles: I like the glares, except for on the Sobek. I really thing that a Sobek under thrust would produce a single larger glare. The intensity, though, is perfect. Bump and Spec channels are needed too.

Big Problem: What really drives me nuts here is that you're using in game models in a render. Its almost enough to compltely ruin the pic. This is one of my big pet peeves.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

What in this image took over 1 hour to render? I mean it's not that complex. Unless you have a very, very crappy computer it shouldn't take that long.

Experimenting with some new techniques
1) I have a P4 running at 2.3 GHz, with a 128mb G4Ti4200 and 512 megs of DDR.

2)The nebulae you see in the background took a while to render.

3) Raytracing

Well supply us with high poly versions of every ship, and we'll make you happy.

I usually atleast smooth quad divide the ships a bit, it's very effective for Vasudan vessels. :)

Too bad all those effects don't come out. Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh but the nebula is just a waste of rendering time, doesn't look very convincing. Better throw it out or make one based on mapped geometry. I don't see anything in the image that would require raytraced shadows, if you used raytraced reflections (for whatever reason) I can't see them.

Cool.
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

You could just render the nebula alone, then use that as a background image for the final render.

Try this for your background
But be warned, it is an uncompressed JPG file, 5 Mb's large

Yeah, well, I wanted a nebula like that, I could just whoop one up in Max's material editor in 30 seconds. But in this picture I wanted an easily editable, B5-ish nebula, without using PSP or other 2d tools.
