Ok, first of all, I apologize for this n00bish question, especially since I think I asked it in the past, but I've got a problem.

Either my computer doesn't like it, or I'm doing something wrong or have the wrong files or whatever, but I can't get ANY of the SCP goodies to work in my game. It would be too complicated to explain what I have and how I run it so I'm going to ask this instead.

Lets say I'm starting scratch. FS2 fresh install, latest update, no mods. What files do I need and what files do I run in order to get all the latest stable SCP project stuff to work in my game? Glowmaps, updated thrusters, shinemaps, everything that's up to date?

Again, I apologize for this, I just really want to see all the hard work you guys have done in action.

  • Aim for the Top!
get the latest FSO build in Bobbau's 'New technology' thread.
get media VP 3.5.6c which is floating around the SCP forum somewhere
get the latest launcher (2.4)

Place all of the files in your Freespace 2 folder where the FS.exe is.

Run the laucher: select the Open executable from the files at the top browser.

Setup the game using the browser.

Press Run.

Aha! I KNEW there was something stupid I was doing. In the launcher I always left it as pointing to the normal FS2.exe. XP I'm an idiot.

Wow, this looks AWESOME!! o_o Glowmaps, shinemaps, engine trails, all working and beautiful. Only one problem. Makes the game run a bit slow. XD; I need a new video card. >_>

Edit: So slow that it's nearly unplayable. And now the game is crashing when I try playing a mission because it's claiming I'm running out of memory or some crap and on NORMAL FS2. Just great fun.

The effects look awesome guys, but I guess I just can't use them.

Sounds like FS2 is trying to load the files in the media VP. Change the extension on the media VP to .vpo and your normal install should work again. :)

Make sure you are using -htl flag and also make sure you try both OGL and D3D and use the one that is faster.

-htl flag? I don't see that on the launcher. *spots launcher v3.3 in your sig* Hmm, maybe I'll try that. I only got 2.4

Edit: Niiiiice. Works great now. Only I can't see jump nodes. >>; They're still there, show up on the radar, I can target them, just nothing visual.

That's a known HT&L bug, that is currently being worked on.  You'll also notice that objects that are more than 30Km away, will not be visible (IE, Knossos 3 from SOC Loop2-2 in FS2).  In addition, depending on which video card you have, small vessels entering subspace may continue through their vortex node (though without thruster glows) and then disappear.  Also, large ships will do the same, but both on subspace entry and exit the ships's glowmaps will be visible on the side of the node that they shouldn't be seen on, and just the glowmaps, no ship will be seen prior to a section's exit from or  after its entry into subspace... (that got a bit confusing didn't it?  Well, I am running on 1 1/2 hours of sleep in 2 days, so that may be the problem).
