Advice Please (model related) !

here's the link if piccy no worky:
blah blah

The ship on the right is a single obj. but isn't symmetrical (this is most obvious when adding stuff in model view)
Ship on the left is one half, copied, mirrored and then boolean'd together. Problem is, I can't remove the central edges where the two faces run parallel (you can see it running up from the nose) without loosing all the connecting edges.

Also, TS won't allow me to weld the verts. and I can't poly draw from say the left hand side to the right to replace missing edges.
I also get probs. converting the ship in PCS.

This is a simple model, but creating symmetrical, complex models would be much easier doing one side and then copying.

Is there a way to get around all this ?
Cheers.:)

Depneds on your TS version. If you're using 3.2 (as I suspect) then no, not very easily. The only thing I might suggest is a mirror with a slight extrusion into a mirror with a slight extrustion.

The problem is that TS sees faces on the same exact plane as being seperate entities.... that is a decades apart as far as TS is concerned.

Example:

<|  +  |>  =  <||>

But  with extrusion: <|]  +  [|>  = <|||>

If using TS 6, doing the above will work. The Booleans are much much better in the new versions. Not to mention the texturing.

I'm using v4.3
I figured the same about the obj. being treated seperate despite glueing etc.
I know some of you hate 'em, but I like aircraft style ships. (wings 'n' fins)

I might jump to TS 5.

If you send me the model, I could fix it up in Lightwave for you.

The most basic way to fix it is to leave a slight gap between the pieces and boolean them together.  Once they are a single object, you delete the faces on the inside of the ship and draw in new faces between the halves to connect them.  Vertex welding after you've done this will give you back your center line symetry.

Odyssey: Thanks but it's just sommethin' I'm doin' for pratice for the minute.

StratComm:TS 4.3 won't allow me to connect an edge between a vertex on one model and a vertex on the other. (polydraw or add edges)

It won't allow any sort of editing/interaction between the two models.

That's why you boolean union them together first.  What I'm talking about may only work in 5+ though, so if it doesn't work then don't worry about it.  I have never used 4.x of Truespace, 3 sucks so badly that I can't bring myself to use it for heirarchy if I can help it, and 5 does enough to do about whatever I like with a model.  I am assuming that ts4 is a little better than its predecessor, but it may easily have many of the same problems.

I'll get v5 soon as Caligari offer it to me cheap enough.

You know TS started out aa an Amiga proggy. Version "3" was actually their 6th attempt.

If you are in difficulty with joining two objects via a face that has same form and same number of vertices,
try my plug-in, TSUNAGE-KUN.

Overview:
http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/~hamano/TS/tngov1.htm

Download:
http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/~hamano/TS/tngv101.zip

This will run under TS4 and TS5.

You made your own plug-ins ? That's pretty cool.
Thanks but it's not the joining that's causing the headaches.
It's the editing afterwards.

Hurrah!

Hey Hamano, TSUNAGE-KUN kicks ass!! Many genuine thanks!!

Looks like TS5 can wait for now. Looks like I've got no excuses too though....:blah:

 • This site stole my work

TS6 has a mirror tool that replaces one side of a model with an identical copy of the other and caters for vertices on the central plane. It works extremely well. Otherwise, do what Beowulf said. He hit the nail on the head.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

I remember another plugin for ts5, similar to hamano's one, capable to join two faces with the same number of verts no matter the face complexity or form, with the possibility to bend the new edges before the final join. It was very useful.
Does anybody know if there's something similar for ts6 too?

btw megatsu I already replyed to the same question  recently: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19521.0.html
hope it's useful

I always get the polypoints >20 error with reagrds to not joining the two faces.
Can you remember what that plug in was ?
