Taking an introductory physics class before fiddling with particle physics would probably make your predictions a bit more accurate, mass and gravity are not the same thing - what you're probably thinking of is the relation that gravity is created by the presence of mass.  Even assuming gravitons exist, a proton has mass (1.7 x 10^-27 grams, roughly, and thats at rest) and while I do concede that the number was calculated based on the effects of gravity on mass (aka weight), you still can't have something that's massless as mass is just the amount of matter - "stuff" if you will - that is present.  In other words, 0 mass = 0 stuff and 0 stuff = not there.

That's a theory.

Gravity is science's final frontier. We know mass causes it, but we don't know why. I had to make some assumptions for my story because we would of course be using artificial gravity.

Do you think there's a better way of coming up with artificial gravity?

        After continued setbacks on Ephesus, a government body within the Xian Empire, called the Nung, begin construction of an asteroidal space station. For the 25 year project, the target is Ngustami, a 200x50km Asteroid. The Nung tunnel out all of its inner structure leaving a shell more than 1km thick. A massive fusion reactor will be used to power the huge engines and the settlement inside. Specialised transparent vents will be designed around the plasma stage running throught the centre of the asteroid to heat it internally, sufficient for the habitation of humans and also to provide artificial lighting. The fusion reactor will be attached to large reaction engines via the plasma stage to propel the asteroid to its destination of choice. Artificial gravity will be created by spinning the asteroid on its axis, to the equivalent of almost 1G. A large dormant comet with be attached to the front of the base asteroid to act as a forward shield to micro-meteorites and for resources and fuel.

        Britannia Federation Defence begins mass construction of anti-matter accelerator orbital bombardment battleships, over 1,000 metres long, using the mass deposits of resources collected by Brittech.

        One hundred Trebuchet starships are completed by the Britannia Federation. Their combined firepower is strong enough to destroy a rocky planet in less than five minutes.

        The Ngustami Asteroid Vessel is completed. 125million Xian citizens take residence in the asteroid. Many Xian imperialists defect to the Nung bringing many military vessels with them. The trip will take almost 30 years to complete.

One ship is destroyed by the Britannia armada, but the other escapes as the Federation loses contact with the captured warship. The third ship set a course for the planet Britannia. Targeting the planet's capital Manchester, the Skulls open fire and replace the city and surrounding areas with a massive crater. The ship then targets the incoming Britannia flagship, the Hood and obliterates it. The ship is subsequently captured during its reloading phase and the criminals are taken into custody. In the months following this tragedy, the Federation announce that they are beginning an effort to retire the entire fleet of Trebuchet warships.

        In a massively coordinated attack, the Ilum seize control of the Free-Trade-Sector. As a result each faction turns hostile to the Ilum and attempts to force them out. The US gain support of their Earth Reclamation draft resolution.

        The alliance successfully ousts the Ilum from Earth and reclaim the Sol system. Joint cooperation between each faction enables them to resume control over their original land. The alliance finally releases all slaves held by the Ilum and uncovers the Ilum's mass genocide.

Description: Only 5% of Shoalhaven is land. The satellite was named due to its endless beaches and coastline. There are no definitive continents with land on the satellite. The majority of the land is just an array of islands and atolls created in Shoalhaven's volcanic youth. Almost all lifeforms are located in the vast single ocean of Shoalhaven.  Not many land animals exist on Shoalhaven and most are very small. Almost all of the islands have tropical conditions and small ecosystems, which can easily be disrupted. Shoalhaven is a large satellite and thus has a low gravitational field. However, due to a dense core, the planet has a higher mass than was originally predicted for its size. Shoalhaven has a gravitational field that is 70% of Earth's. The satellite orbits the large gas giant planet Volition and often goes through ecliptic cycles. Due to Shoalhaven's orbit around Volition, the tidal forces can get extreme enough for mass flooding.
History: The United Nations adapted to the environment of Shoalhaven very quickly. While not much land is available on Shoalhaven, the abundance of food, ideal weather and low gravity contributed significantly to the United Nations' early Golden Age. The UN colony ship landed on what was named Manhattan Island, which spawned Neo York city. The abundant ocean plant krill was cultivated early by the United Nations and became the primary source of food in the United Nations, even in the modern era. The low gravity made construction and engineering a breeze for the workers on Shoalhaven. As a result, expansion came early and so did growth. However, the inevitable lack of land significantly affected the land-based ecosystem and lifeform extinction grew as rapidly as the UN's expansion. The United Nations government eventually turned to the ocean and began construction of large island cities and underwater complexes. These aquatic stations and cities prepared the UN for space travel and construction to become the leading faction in space in the modern era.

Description: Ephesus is a young planet in a young system. Only recently, in the last couple of million years, the planet's atmosphere had stabilized enough to be compatible for life. And only in the past 10,000 years has the planet's atmosphere had enough oxygen quota to support Human life. Only primitive lifeforms can be found on Ephesus, such as bacteria and small plants. Much of the surface is still in a state of volcanic activity, rendering almost 15% of the surface uninhabitable.
History: When the Xian Empire first colonised Ephesus, the conditions were less than habitable. After the first few months, the settlement ultimately had to move into a new region eventually founding the modern-day Xian City. Due to the hostile environment, many disasters occurred in the early colonial era. Such us the carbon monoxide gassing, the water-supply poisoning, as well as unpredictable quakes and eruptions. However, the largest setback for the Xian people was the lack of food supply. After consuming nearly all of the rations brought along for the journey, the Xianese realised that food wasn't readily available and was almost non-existent on Ephesus. Unfortunately, the Xian Emperor Soone had to enact a food shortage program, which caused a lot of fatalities, but ultimately helped to secure the community's future.

Britannia Federation

Planet Name: Britannia
Parent: Eta Cassiopeiae A

Diametre: 13,148 km
Description: The planet Britannia is a largish habitable world with dense cloud coverage. Britannia is positioned at the limit of the habitable zone of Eta Cassiopeiae A. Its atmosphere has dense clouds, which output a greenhouse effect. This greenhouse effect delivers a perfect balance for the planet, keeping an average temperature of 20 degrees. Due to the thick cloud coverage, the surface of Britannia does not receive much light. Daytime is almost dark and always has a lot of moisture in the air, making it very humid, while at night it is constantly raining. This effect is fairly standardised over the entire world due to the consistent cloud cover. Most plants on Britannia have very large leaves to soak in as much as they can of the little light that is received every day. There is a large quantity of fungus lifeforms that consume the remains of the plant life on the surface.
History: It was over a week before the colony ship landed on Britannia after orbital insertion. A survey squad had to be sent to the surface to find an optimal location to settle as sensors couldn't accurately penetrate the thick cloud coverage of the planet. After the first colony was built on the surface, many entrepreneurs began to start up their own businesses spawning an excellent economy for the Britannia Federation. Many people embraced the abundance of resources on Britannia forming a strong commercial and industrial presence. However, there were many colonists who couldn't adapt to the dense gravity of the planet and physical stress caused many injuries.

European Union

Planet Name: Gaia
Parent: Beta Comae Berenices
Capital City: Promitor
Diametre: 12,580 km
Description: The planet Gaia is almost entirely covered by forest. Gaia has three large seas, which comprise almost all of the 23% of water to land ratio of its surface. The planet is full of life ranging from microscopic insects to large 30 metre tall reptiles (Umbrak). Gigantic plants that can extend several kilometres over the surface are common on Gaia as well as very tall trees reaching heights of several hundred metres. The most intelligent non-sentient species is found on Gaia called the Trew. A trew is a large bird capable of flight and has great intelligence. However, its brain is not as advanced as a human's and as a result has never formed a civilisation.
History: Similar to the Britannia Federation colony ship, it took many weeks for the European colony ship to find a suitable position to land on Gaia due to the immense forests. A small landing party ventured to the chosen position and cleared an area for landing. When the trew species were discovered, they were quickly put to use to help the colonists set up their colony. The trews were treated well and are still widely used in the modern era. Many europeans adopt a trew as a pet, helper and/or companion.

Ilum Believers

Planet Name: Earth

Description: Earth has undergone three major peroids within the last few centuries. Pre 2200 Earth was a relative paradise for all that lived on its surface. However, a new ice age (concept thought had began rapidly approaching, causing major climatic disruptions. With much of life on Earth wiped out, the Humans had a new Earth to deal with. With experience in terraforming Mars, the Humans began to mass-modify the environment and climate of Earth to its ideal state. Years passed, but the climate changed. As the clouds cleared, it revealed a startlingly new Earth. The planet was reborn as new life took to the new environment quickly.

I really don't see a 3rd world war coming any time soon. China and the US wouldn't risk a serious conflict because it is far too dangerous and there's no real point. A cold war maybe, but not a military war. The Ilum conflict in my story lasted for over 30 years if that's any concilation.

NASA's decline I agree with. Hopefully I've outlined it well enough in the timeline. NASA is all but gone in the 30's and 40's and pretty much is disbanded once the Space Elevator comes along.

Ok, I've finalised the whole interstellar travel thingo. It will be similar to FreeSpace's subspace travel, but I've refined and personalised it, etc.

I've given each star a value corresponding to its size and temperature. If the values overlap another star for example, there linkage. If another value overlaps another value, while not the star itself, there will be an unstable connection.

With these values in place, most stars will have at least one linkage, but it is rare for them to have more than three. Problem is, is that it doesn't quite create a network. I've tried increasing the value, but then there's too many linkages.

Lest, the connections come into play. However, I'm not sure how to approach it. I've got several ideas and I was hoping I could get some advice or further suggestions.

• A ship has to conventionally travel the entire distance and set up a matching gate to connect with the original gate to stabalise the connection. (interesting idea for story events and limiting space expansion)
  
• The unstable connections randomly stabilise for a temporary period of time, giving time to construct a gate on the other side. (Perfect situation for story writers as a plot event, but is a little :devil: )
  
• An expensive advanced ship can travel through the unstable connection to begin construction of a gate on the other side. (If one ship can do it, then it leaves it open in the story for other ships to do it, perhaps rogue 'pirate' vessels or something)

       The USS Enterprise CVN-65 is the first military vessel to combat the War Against Terrorism proposed by the United States of America.

       The Mars 2001 Odyssey probe discovers high levels of solid water on Mars, as well as an extreme radiation belt in orbit giving the manned mission to Mars another set-back.
       A terrorist attack on the holiday island of Bali kills over one hundred people and demonstrates that no-one is safe from terrorism anywhere in the world. Terrorism continues to one of its worst levels in the region of Israel.

       In the same week of the year as the destruction of the Challenger, NASA's space shuttle Colombia breaks up during re-entry 62km above the surface of Earth at 11 times the speed of sound, just minutes before it was due to land.
       5 years of diplomatic talks between Iraq and the UN are exhausted and a Security Council vote for a military resolution is made. France and Russia veto, but the US, Britain and Australia lead a coalition of 30 nations to remove the ruling regime of Iraq and bring prosperity to the people of Iraq.

       China sends a Human to the moon.

       The popularity of the Chinese moon landing reinvigorates NASA as a Lunar Base, called Lunar 1, is proposed to assist interplanetary travel.

       The Europa Penetrator lands on Europa and begins its 14 month descent through the icy crust.

2018
       The Europa Descender manages to break through the crust and enters an underwater world full of primitive single-celled and multi-celled life. The Descender catalogues a small section of Europa's ecosystem and discovers that the liquid water has a high melaticity, which would be fatal to most life-forms on Earth. After five days of transmitting, half of its designated schedule, NASA loses contact with the probe.
       The CEV performs maintenance on the Terrestrial Planet Finder and installs new hardware.

2019
       The Terrestrial Planet Finder is finally heralded a success after discovering Earth-size and even Mars-size planets in nearby star systems.
       The first stage of Lunar 1 is launched. NASA astronauts land on the Moon on the 50th anniversary of the last footsteps by a NASA astronaut. They prepare the base site for Lunar 1 and set up the robotics and power supply for the next 6 stages.

       For undisclosed reasons the Middle East begins to slow exports of its resources…

       The Deep Space III probe is launched with an atomic engine, which catalogues the composition of many near-Earth asteroids at record breaking speeds.

        An update of all terms and classifications of celestial bodies and regions is made by the astronomical society. The Sol System now has just 8 planets as Pluto is downgraded to a minor-planet. The term 'moon' becomes a classification-name and as such, the Earth's moon is officially named Lunar.
       The TPF find strong evidence of a terrestrial sized planet in the habitable zone of Zeta(1) Reticuli 40 light-years away. Further examinations continue.
       More funding goes into the Fusion project in the US due to the slowing supplies of resources from the Middle East.

2023
       The final stage of Lunar 1 is connected and the first Lunar scientists take up their residence. A permanent Human presence on the Moon is established.
      After lengthy calculations using the data from the TPF, the terrestrial sized planet in Zeta(1) Reticuli is concluded to being capable of perhaps supporting primitive life. However, it is unlikely that animals or leaf bearing plants are part of its ecosystem as the ozone in the atmosphere is rather small.
      After examining over 500 star systems in its 50 light-year range, the TPF is retired. The TPF created an invaluable planetary catalog of the local stellar neighbourhood, along with the discovery of the Earth-like Zeta(1) Reticuli planet named Reticuli.

2024
       The first commercial aerospace plane is put into service. The DC-20 makes long travel time a thing of the past.

2025
       A small scale orbital microwave power station is launched into orbit of Earth and is highly successful.
       The ISS is retired.

2028
       Lunar 1 Depot is completed on the moon. Most interplanetary craft use this station as a waypoint.

2030
       Funded by the USA, the UN begins a 15 year project to develop an Orbital Space Elevator at a cost of $US10bill.

       The first stage of the Orbital Elevator begins as an exhausted natural gas platform is moved to the equator just off the coast of Ecuador and construction begins to convert it into the base anchor or 'Alpha Site'. Japan joins the joint UN initiative and begins construction of the carbon-nanotube cable.

       As construction of Alpha Site of the Orbital Elevator is completed, a CEV deploys the initial stage of the 40cm thick - 30,000km long carbon-nanotube cable. Using laser guidance, the cable reaches Alpha Site and is securely attached.

       Climbers begin attaching more carbon-nanotubes to the Space Elevator cable enabling it to carry larger payloads.
       Many CEV launches are cancelled due to high-expectations of the Space Elevator.

       The Millennium Spire is completed in Washington. At a height of 5,400m, it is the single tallest structure ever constructed by Humans.

       Cold fusion power is finally perfected and commercially distributed. Cold fusion power plants begin construction around the world. Coal and Oil companys are given contracts for the development of the new power plants in an initiative to prevent major economic disruption.
       The Hilton Orbital Hotel is completed in low Earth orbit and the first tourists take up residence.

       Ilum separates their territory allowing for the formation of Kurdistan, which the Kurds have been requesting for centuries. Ilum demand that Turkey separate their territory also for Kurdistan. A large area of Turkey becomes disputed as a Kurd uprising in the region is spawned.

       The EU begin constructing their colony ship. In negotiated talks, the EU and Xian Empire withhold their plans for the new interstellar engine from the UN and Ilum. Ilum at age 125 declares holy war upon the EU and personally goes on a suicide mission and destroys the EU colony ship drive section placing a large delay on the launch date of their colony ship. Hostilities break out between the EU and the Ilum Believers. The Xian Empire steps in and the Ilum Believers call a cease-fire after four months of fighting and 350,000 casualties.
       Ilum's son, Ilum II is demanded by the Believers to become his father's successor. Age 65 ~24.

       The UN somehow manages to gather details regarding the new interstellar engine and the EU and Xian Empire accuse the UN of espionage. Sanctions are put in place until the UN has an opportunity to provide evidence otherwise.

       Taking advantage of the Xian situation, the Ilum quickly neutralise their defences and demand submission into their dominion as Ilum's new minions. The Xian have no choice but to agree to their demands so long as they make no military contributions.
       The oldest human in history is recorded at 127. She still looks like she's in her 30's thanks to the AGED-gene.

       After much sacrifice, the EU dissipate and form a strong alliance with other western nations. Uniting the old Britannia Federation states and the remainder of the UN, the EU forms the Western Coalition in a final attempt to stop the Ilum.
       The Ilum launch a nuclear ballistic missile toward the western seaboard of North America. The Western Coalition's UN sect's anti-ballistic missile program fires a space-based particle weapon to destroy the missile as it is flying low over Sacramento. The warhead is detonated 20m above the city of Sacramento producing a nuclear explosion equivalent of 20 megatons of TNT. Most of the city is destroyed. The Western Coalition did not know that it was a nuclear device prior to interception. The fatality list for Sacramento city reaches 4.2 million by the end of the year.
       The UN sect of the Western Coalition makes the first combat deployment of the Renown Mobile Fortress. Its revolutionary design contributes to many successful victories over the Ilum.

       A massive offensive by the Ilum sees that the mobile fortress Renown is destroyed with all hands. 840 UN personnel die onboard the Renown.

       The Chansik volcano nearby Shou-Lao City lets loose a vast amount of carbon monoxide, blanketing the Xianese city in poisonous gas. 8.22 million Xianese die. Emperor Xian is hit by debris and becomes critically injured. After two months of intensive care, Xian leaves hospital crippled and resigns from the position of Emperor. His trusted regent, Chen-Ji Soone, is elected as the new Emperor.

       An experimental procedure using nanobots is conducted on former Emperor Xian. The procedure is successful with minor side-effects. Xian effectively pioneers the nanosurgeons, which over the coming years, radically changes the way Xianese are treated with injuries and diseases.

       After extensive testing, a pill is distributed throughout the UN to modify the human body to reduce the effects of fatigue by up to 1000%.

       At age 183, Qin-Li Xian runs for office once more. The Xianese vote a resounding 96% for the original Emperor of Xian to be new Emperor.
       In one of his first acts, Emperor Xian attempts communication with Earth. Unsuccessful at first, the Xian eventually makes contact with the rebel faction. They learn that the Ilum have discovered subspace travel. After receiving details of the Ilum’s occupation, Emperor Xian requests all details regarding the Ilum on Mars. He discovers that a large population now live on the surface and their power source is the 4 large Xian mirrors that the Ilum completed. The Xian still have the Q-comm frequency to control those mirrors and they believe the Ilum have not removed the particular systems that are deep inside the structure of the mirrors. Emperor Xian proposes to use this as persuasion for the Ilum to meet their demands.

       After many failed attempts at communication with the Ilum, Xian redirects a mirror. With major loss of power across Mars, the Ilum finally open communications. Ilum demands all details regarding subspace travel and orders that the occupation of Xian must stop immediately otherwise he will navigate the mirrors out of orbit to descend destructively on the major Mars cities. The Ilum stall the Xian as they search for the Q-comm buried deep inside the mirrors, but the Xian don’t buy and direct all mirrors away from their receiving stations, effectively removing all primary power systems across Mars. As emergency power begins to fail across Mars, the Ilum reluctantly give the Xian details regarding subspace travel, while the mirrors are returned to there nominal positions. The Xian continue their demands for the end of the occupation of the Xian on Earth, but the Ilum continue to stall them.

       The Xian periodically remove power from Mars, not wishing to kill any innocents just yet. The Ilum finally have no choice but to end their occupation of Xian. The Ilum leave the Xian on Earth, leaving in a destructive rampage.
       The Xian are successful at their first subspace jump. Emperor Xian begins a project to search for a path leading to Earth.
       All islands on UN planet Shoalhaven are inhabited. Construction of a floating city begins.

The food processors use nanobots, which seek the components for certain foodstuffs then reconstruct it into 'meals'. The UN learn that the Xian have returned to Earth and are upset that they did not threaten the Ilum to stop their occupation of the UN on Earth with the threat of the mirrors. The Xian claims that if they had done so, they believe that the Ilum would have justified the loss of life on Mars over the loss of two great losses on Earth. But the UN remains defiant that the rebel faction that helped them almost 30 years ago wasn’t just composed of Xian members, but also the UN and other factions, without them they would not have been able to do what they did. Diplomatic avenues are difficult between Xian-UN after this dibarcle.

       With US government funding an ex-pioneer of the subspace program completes construction of a modified personal shuttle and begins the first phase of mapping the local subspace network. Taking his family along for the ride, he successfully discovers x star systems in the first year.

       Former Emporer Qin-Li Xian, the founder of the Xian dynasty, dies at age 220 (equivalent of 95yo in old scale). After a week of mourning, Emperor Shian enacts a week long annual holiday to celebrate the 220 year life and reign of Xian.

The Xian also begin transplanting life from Ephasus that can survive in the planet’s thin oxygen atmosphere.

       The shadow government of the Xian Empire, the Nung party, begin construction of an asteroidal space station, which is authorised by Hekerra. For the 25 year project, the target is Ngustami, a 200x50km Asteroid. The Nung tunnel out all of its inner structure leaving a shell more than 1km thick. A massive fusion reactor will be used to power the huge engines and the settlement inside. Specialised transparent vents will be designed around the plasma stage running throught the centre of the asteroid to heat it internally, sufficient for the habitation of humans and also to provide artificial lighting. The fusion reactor will be attached to large reaction engines via the plasma stage to propel the asteroid to its destination of choice. Artificial gravity will be created by spinning the asteroid on its axis, to the equivalent of almost 1G. A large dormant comet with be attached to the front of the base asteroid to act as a forward shield to micro-meteorites and for resources and fuel.

Many Xian imperialists defect to the Nung bringing many military vessels with them. The trip will take almost 30 years to complete.

       The European Union, with support from the Xian Empire, demand that the Britannia Federation disarm their Trebuchet warships. Britannia is reluctant until a criminal faction called the Flaming Skulls manages to steal three Trebuchet warships. The Skulls take two of the ships into the Free-Trade-Sector where the Britannia military pursues them. The Britannia armada destroys one ship, but the other escapes as the Federation loses contact with the captured warship. The third ship sets a course for planet Britannia. Targeting the planet's capital Manchester, the Skulls open fire and replace the city and surrounding areas with a massive crater. The ship then targets the incoming Britannia flagship, the Hood, and obliterates it. The ship is subsequently captured during its reloading phase and the criminals are taken into custody. In the months following this tragedy, the Federation announce that they are beginning an effort to retire the entire fleet of Trebuchet warships.

       The alliance successfully ousts the Ilum from Earth and reclaims the Sol system. Joint cooperation between each faction enables them to resume control over their original land. The alliance finally releases all slaves held by the Ilum and uncovers the Ilum's mass genocide.

Some notable changes in this version:

- Updated current/proposed plans by NASA and China.
- Instead of Russia dying out, the Russian colony ship has an onboard disaster and never makes it to its destination (I don't have a problem with Russia, they just don't fit in anywhere in my story).
- Ilum is a product of advanced genetic engineering and vaguely hears other people's thoughts, which he misinterprets as the voice of god.
- The tachyon particle has been abolished. In it's place is the very promising Quantum Entanglement.
- A review of my own version of the drake equation re-evaluates the number of habitable planets and intelligent life in my universe to reflect a more realistic look. As a result, the colony ships have to go much further and it takes them an extra 3 centuries.
- The Earth rebellion get involved more with uniting the factions.
- Many more people are taken up in the colony ships (which now range between 2-6 km in length).
- The Ilum wars are updated.
- More wide-spread effects of the introduction of fusion power.
- More realistic approach and timeframe for searching for terrestrial planets.
- Elaboration regarding people and bases on Lunar.
- Elaboration regarding people in Sol system.
- Mars terraforming slowed down until the introduction of the Ilum oxygen generators.
- Larger role for Mars, particularly between Ilum-Xian.
- Earth degredation set earlier. And explanation is now in place, much further into the timeline 3000+.
- Introduction of a new faction called the Nordic Federation (split from the Britannia Federation - later called the Britannia Syndicate), which seek out pleasure and focus their economy on tourism aspects.
- Malaysia no longer is part of the Ilum Believers. It remains its own sovereign nation. It is also allocated a terrestrial world in the San Diego Summit, but never builds a colony ship as it lacks the necessary resources, economics or technology. This also evens up the military aspect between the Ilum and other factions until the other faction leave Earth.
