anyone know any way to hack this thing to make it accept .avi files?

okay, then. here's another question: in the advanced settings, there are three choices:

command briefing or tech room animation
ship/weapon animation
mainhall animation

which one do i use to make an explosion?

ship/weapon animation, I suggest.
By the way,you may open the [V] explosion and click on its properties. From there, read how many mainframes it has.
