When any jackass can get his hands on a SAM for like $100 bucks, the usefulness of helicopters would be somewhat diminished I would imagine.

But for looks, I'de say the Hind.

Um, Venom, you might want to watch any American airshow where they fly an Apache. They do the barrel rolls, loops, backward somersaults and stuff, like... um... all the time. I grew up on US Army bases and watched them flying the things constantly. They can't FLY upside down, but basic aerobatics is pretty easy.

So, it can do it too? seems I haven't checked my sources better than you on that point :p
The point is, anything the Apache does, the Hokum can do too, like it or not :p
( what's up with that stupid NATO naming convention again, btw? They already designated the Mi28 Hokum too :doubt: )

As for the SR71, the US didn't make a new version, right? they kept the old thing coz they couldn't bother making a new version. If they had done a new one, they would have made it another way, don't you think?
I dunno about you, but I don't think the russians are more stupid or anyhing, and think " even if it's broken, let's not fix it ). :p

Possibly, I'm no expert but I've played a fair few copter sims, the point of the copter is that is has more agility due to the ability to hover. Terrain use is vitally important to a helicopter pilot for stealth, both visually and on radar. A good pilot in a good copter could take out someone with a SAM without them even realising there was a helicopter there.
What frequency are you getting? Is it noise or sweet sweet music? - Refused - Liberation Frequency.

In a computer game maybe, little more difficult in reallife. Lots of scenery to hide behind and such.

Mikhael, its ok for the US to be keeping on wasteful projects but Russia simply doesnt have the funds to put good stuff like the Yakhonts and t-90 into service, let alone wasteful stuff. The fact that its in active service at the minute suggests that the russians are quite happy with it. Bear in mind these guys have 20+ years experience of getting their helos shot down in afghanistan and chechyna so they should know what works and what doesnt.

In theory. In reality, the helos makes noise, heat, lots of things that make it not so invisble, hidden behind a hill or not.

Gank: I stand corrected, but I'm sure there's another older russian copter designated Hokum. That or they screwed up somewhere in the Gunship2000 manual :p

Yeah, but some helos also have 'silent running'. It reduces warmth output etc etc. :)

Hows the WC3 map coming btw? :p

Watched Blue Thunder recently? That's probably true, but I doubt there's any miracle, the sound and heat emissions can't be that lowered, imho. If you can spot a soldier's heat in a thick jungle with just IR googles, I'm sure a good radar can't miss an helo.

Actually, you can redirect a large amount of the heat and sound emissions straight down, Venom. That's how stealthed helicopters work. Hide one running in that mode behind a hill and I guarantee you will NOT hear it.

Then how come the people who shoot and destroy them don't agree? I guess helo pilots are stuborn and don't do what they've learned :p

Perhaps we're not communicating, Venom. Could you, you know, explain what you mean, slowly and carefully?

I've hear an Apache running quiet. The sound is incredibly subdued, compared to the usual sound of the rotor. If it were out of sight, I would either not hear it, or I would not associate that sound with a helicopter.

Then again you were not on a battlefield, expecting anything to happen, with the gear to help you find bogeys :)

Well, no, I didn't have gear, but the "quiet running" modes of helicopters aren't intended for men with listening gear. See, you can still actually, you know, HEAR IT. And if you know what a heilcopter in this mode sounds like, you will know what it is, gear or no.

As for being on a battlefield, don't you ever listen? I grew up on Army bases. I joined the navy. I don't hang around on battlefields. That's for targets, bullet-catchers and fools.

Kewl new chopper for the Royal Navy - the Merlin:

Like this better than the Lynx (though this can't be used as a gunship AFAIK) - not as ugly...

What's wrong with the Lynx? I think it's cool.
Anyway, that's funny how your merlin looks almost exactly like our ( well, our, it's mostly Eurocopter, so it's about 1/3 german 1/3 french, and the rest from spain and italy ) NH90 :p

Call me biaised, but I prefer the NH90 :p
