Sound problems with FS2_open3.5.5(3-5-2004) version
I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question,  but I'm running Asus P4B with 1GB of RAM and AC97 codecs using a alc201 onboard card. I noticed that even in the 3-5-2004 fs2_open 3.5.5 build that I still get the cracking and buzzing sounds no matter what sound option I choose.  I know that it is my card because if I disable sound,  the game works fine.  I had the same problem in the regular Freespace2 program even with the 1.2 patch installed.  My question is can this problem be fixed in fs2_open3.5.5(3-5-2004) and will this problem be address in fs2_open 3.6.

Please note that I have already downloaded the latest ac97 codecs from www.realtek.com.tw.

Any help would be appreciated.

I experienced this on extreeeemly rare ocasions, only once or twice, I've heard it's been a problem for a small number of people,
versions prior to 3.6 seemed to have some small anomalys, but they have disapeared as far as I can tell with the 3.6 generation graphics, this means that it might be less of a problem or fixed, but nobody did anything to fix it so it's only a small posability.

It's not the speakers Phreak.  I know it's the sound card because I used the same speakers  days before with a Asus TUV4X motherboard and had absolutely no problems at all with the game.  This only happened after I upgraded to a Asus P4B motherboard. The ALC201 with AC97 is supposed to provide more realistic sound, but as far as I can tell all it does is cause more serious prolbems.

Tell me if anyone has noticed this problem with anyone using a Audigy 2 sound card?  If not, I might have to do an upgrade.

I own an Audigy2, very few problems with the latest driver set.

I used to have problems in much the same manner with my old PC. I never tried it with FS2_open but retail had the problems you describe. Never did solve it cause I upgraded anyway.

I forgot to mention that  it also causes poping sounds and many times the game simply returns the player to the desktop.

By the way, I thought about Bobboau's statement and can't believe that more people who own the ASUS P4B aren't complaining about this problem because the P4B is a very popular motherboard.  Maybe they all just upgraded to a better sound card and didn't tell the rest of us.

That, or it's driver related, somehow.

I get these static effects momentarily when loading up a mainhall menu (ship database, mission simulator, etc.) for the first time, but it doesn't happen ingame. This is with an SBLive soundcard.

I agree with Kasperl.  I strongly believe that it is driver related.  I play MicroSoft Flight Simulator as well, and I noticed that it sometimes struggles with sound when using the AC'97 codecs as well.  I've contacted the company, but to be honest I don't have much hope in getting a reasonable response.
