To add the versions to the new Command Line page of the Wiki, I build a little timeline. (Each gap indicates ~3 month space)

Eh? There've been non-major builds since the source came out. Most came out after 3.5.5, because of the huge gap. The current fad of releasing a build to try out a new feature started somewhere in there, and IMHO that's mostly because it's so difficult to get a new release out the door.

don't feature test build get confusing though? and what about the code behind those builds? that surely has to be some major mess when you have multiple deviant builds...

Right now, there are only three truly different codebases. The CVS one, which is the one most builds come from, the Boboau one, which contains the decal and env stuff, and will be merged soon with the CVS one. And something by a Starwars TC team, which is pretty much unrelated, just based on 3.6 somewhat.

And the Icculus one

Yes, but that is more of an FS2 codetree then an FSO one.....
