ok, i finally got all the needed files to make FS2 run fully but i dunno where to put them to make it work. What files do i put where. I hgave all the VP files and i just put them in the FS2 directory. So where am i actually supposed to put them?

That is where they go, , the root FreeSpace Directory. Hypothetically, you could put any extra file in the root directory, it is where FreeSpace looks for the files first. Then comes whats in the Data folders, then any mod folders (if you are using the FS2 Launcher for FS2_Open).

I know, i put them there but it still will not run and the updater wont work.

Fractux included a readme on his FTP which explains it even better than my FAQ does.

These VP files are then to be placed into your
main Freespace directory. Make sure to
download and install root_fs2_vp.exe, as this
is the root.vp file used in FreeSpace2 v1.2 .

---------MUST DO THE FOLLOWING-----------------
                  
 You must delete the folowing in order for the
 new VP files to work. The name of the VP file
 that contains the data is on the right.
                                           
 DELETE ALL FILES (NOT DIRECTORIES) IN THE  
 FOLOWING DIRECTORIES AND THEIR SUBDIRECTORIES

You should make sure to download the
" root_fs2_vp.exe " as it was updated
slightly in the v1.2 patch.

As for the patch not working. The exe you have is actually v1.2. The vp is v1.0 however. If you downloaded the root.vp you don't need the patch so you can ignore the updater.  

If you didn't download it don't bother going to the FTP as you can get it from my site without wasting any of the FTP's valuable bandwidth.

I used VPView to extract and replace the files in the Data folder. If I wanted to use root.vp, would it still work?

If you still have all the vp files your best bet is to simply copy your players folder to a new Data folder and rename the old one.

Extracting to Data is a rather messy solution that will bite you on the arse the first time you attempt to play a mod. The contents of the Data folder override the .vp files so you'd never be able pursuade the game to look at the data from the mod.

Argh. Now I'm having the same problems as LostKrazoa. Do you need to download the sparky_fs2.vp file as well?

Okay, I've fixed the problem. Everything is working now; I had to use those two registry keys.
