I have tried to patch up the HOTU copy of FS2 that i have with files from these ftp servers but when i try and run the game i keep getting told i need to use the luancher (which then runs automatically) to configure the game. The program assumes this is the first time i have run the game and even though i have set it all up it still wont let me play; i keep getting the setup message.

Okay. A couple of quick questions.

1) Are you running the FS2 launcher and then clicking on play?

2) Did everything work before you installed all the VPs?

3) Did you install the registry entries available from the server. (I'm not actually certain that you should but I've heard that HotU sets up the registry differently from FS2 Retail)

4) Have you tried runing FS2 from the FS2_Open launcher.  (Available from here ) If not it may be worth a try. Download, unrar and place in the Freespace2 folder. Run it and click on browse. Click on the files of type option and choose Official Retail exe. Choose the FS2.exe. Set up the options as you did in the retail launcher and then click run.

5) Whether the above steps solve your problem or not I reccomend trying FS2_Open. Now that PXO is down the only reason for using FS2 Retail is cause your computer won't run FS2_Open.  Get started here

Though I'm no Karajorma, I would suggest finding an entry through Regedit about FirstRun. (Should be named something like that.) If/when you find it, set it to either 0 or 1, see which works. Don't add/remove anything, though.

I don't see a FirstRun entry in the registry but there is one called StraightToSetup which is set to 0 on my PC.

EDIT : I did a little testing and this value is definately the one that pops up the error. If you know how to use Regedit run it and change that key to 0.

If not run the FS2_Open launcher click on the registry tab and tell me what value is next to the Straight to Setup Option. I'm willing to bet it's not 0. If it's not post and I or someone else here will walk you through how to change the key using regedit.

Thanks, I tried the open launcher but it just went straight back to the desktop and the game therefore didnt start.

Did you point the launcher to your Freespace2.exe file? Or to your FS_Open.exe file, if you are using it?

I set it to fs2.exe as the guy said. Also the registry files on the ftp servers are not recognisable by windows as proper registry files and so it wont import them.

As I said in my second post have a look a the registry tab in the FS2_Open launcher and tell me what it says.

There is no straight to setup option present.

That's odd. Might explain why this is occuring.

And follow the step by step instructions for inserting a registry hack. However instead of creating one called D3DTextureDivider like it says instead create one called StraightToSetup. Make sure the value is set to zero.
