In FreeSpace everyone (well, nearly everyone) must have noticed the weird inertia i.e. you need to keep your burners on to continue going at top speed.

Well I reckon the only credible theory is that there is air in "space" outside the Sol system, because you never fly in the Sol system in either FS Game and the only Hard REAL facts we have is that there is no air in ""Our"" space.

Basically, it's because Newtonian physics in space sim games suck :p.  They're not about precise, accurate simulations of real life; they're about blowing huge **** up :D.

In this case blowing up Shivans/NTF/HOL stuff.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

because shooting down the chepest fighter in frontier:elite 2/first encounters is a million times more difficult than blowing up a sathanas juggernaught in freespace.

I know the designers didn't really think

maybe there is air outside the solar system let's base the entire physics engine on this idea
I'm just coming up with a credible theory for the physics of the game

credible? :doubt:

If you really want an explanation, how about simply that GTVA fighters (and bombers) have a series of narrow thruster/outgas apetures used to damp inertia and ease pilot control.

I know its unlikely and your theory is better, but that was really the point of this thread, to find out people's theories on it. I wasn't saying Air in "Space" is the be-all and end-all. I've been slaughtered for airing my opinion.

do freespace ships run inertial dampners?
