Ok, a volcano really shouldn't be turning in to a political debate.  It's not even like the thing is threatening a population center or anything.  Please?

I was just being silly :sigh:

It's a terrible thing. :(

There happy now?:D

I'm of the opinion that we need a representation of nature's true power every once in a while to remind us of our place.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

No shaking, no plume of smoke that was visible (I live in the Puget Sound area), I heard about it on the news.

Mt St Helens is errupting!
there was another hiccup around noon today -- there was a ~50 minute harmonic tremor -- new hazard zone extends up to 5 miles.  USGS field observatory (3mi distance) was evacuated

They think they are dealing with new magma!  gas readings were "Scrubbed" by heavy rains

They are putting NO geologists on the ground in the crator area

Volcanic Explositive Index:
They were expecting a 1
Now expecting a 2 (maybe 3 or 4 even)

the VEI is similiar to the richtog in being logarithmic

Scientists warn Saturday that Mount St. Helens could erupt within 24 hours, and with more force than previously expected. "There is a 50 percent chance or greater that there is going to be an eruption and a good chance that it will involve magma," said the U.S. Geological Survey's Tom Pierson. "We're watching very closely." On Friday the volcano spewed a harmless plume of steam and ash into the air but it was still the biggest eruption by the volcano in 18 years.

...We're on the home stretch...

...*grumbles*....just watch...it'll blow in the night...

Webmaster Update - October 02, 2004 at 7:30 pm PDT - The USGS issued a Level III Volcano Alert today, which included the evacuation of the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The VolcanoCam is now the closest operating camera to Mount St. Helens. It continues to function with no problem.

We captured all images of yesterday's eruption and plan to do the same for today's event. Watch for the update to the VolcanoCam web site in the next few days.
