The two are, of course, not at all mutually exclusive. Image sigs aren't simply announcing your interests, they're shoving it down people's throats
every single time you post. I've been to boards where the signal-to-noise ratio from all the oversized avatars and sigs is so high that you can barely pick out the individual messages at all. If you really think anybody cares what your interests are (which, I hate to break it to you, most people do not), then put a link in your sig.
As for hyperlinking to sigs-- that's just surreal. If you're going to hyperlink to something, why not a full page? The entire point of an image sig is to compress your "personal expression" into a space just small enough to avoid getting banned. With an offsite link, no such restriction exists.
