all you wireless network gurus.
so anyway, i've got this laptop (windows 98SE) that someone gave me... and i bring it to my friends house to leech his wireless bandwidth, and i take it to college, and it works every time (the most i ever have to do is maybe ipconfig /release and /renew, and bam, it works)

however i just recently (a few days ago) set up a wireless access point at my house, and being paranoid, i set the SSID to something, and i set the channel to '6'.  in the laptop, i went from network properties --> clicked adaptor --> clicked properties --> clicked "advanced" --> and then set the SSID and channel on teh laptop to correlate with the WAP's settings.  it didn't work, but after i put 'channel' on "Not Specified" on the laptop, it did.  when i went to college, i put the settings back like they were (i.e. put SSID on the laptop back to "Not Specified").  didn't work though.  i tried rebooting and ipconfig /renew dozens of times, but still not.  when i try to ipconfig /renew_all it freezes for a few minutes, then says "Could not find DHCP server.  Renewing adapfor for ""    "

people next to me are sitting on their laptops online, and i can't.  so what could the problem be?

Thanks in advance

What type (brand) of network adapter do you have.

some no-name brand, so i don't remember.  it's a 802.11b though, so it should work...  in the end i just uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and it works now, so we'll see how that goes.

Hey anyone remember how to get rid of the "Log on" window that appears as soon as windows starts?  i click 'cancel' and it keeps loading windows, but there was some way to disable it...

actually it's the NETWORK password.  "Enter Network Password".

Hmm, i used to know how to do that on my old '98 machine. I think you change it in the network protocol screen (with tcip, protocols etc). I think you disable microsoft family networking or something like that.

good call, after 2 hours of messing around and uninstalling/reinstalling my adaptors, i found out, and you're right, that if you change "Primary network logon" from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to something else, like "Microsoft Family Logon", etc. that goes away, and solves all my problems (for now anyway... maybe it's a coincidence)

;)
thx for everyone's help
