Or do rotating turrets in Freespace not behave particuarly well? They seem to move far too fast most of the time, almost flicking from onr position to another, even on canon ships, and seem to carry weapons that are far too weak for their size, why is a cannon the size of a Herc only normally carry that Terran Turret weapon that fires about once every 2 seconds and isn't a threat to fighters or even particuarly to bombers? They sit halfway between anti-cap and point defence and don't seem to play any real role, after the beams came into play.

Anyway, that's my thoughts for the day :)

the blob turrets are good against bombs, and thats basically it.

although i guess its a good thing then, since bombs are a rather large threat

Thing is, anything that hits a bomb will kill it, so if they used a lighter turret with something like Proms or Subachs, rotating turrets become a formidable point defence system, that would still be just as effective against bombs.

If I were kitting out a Hecate, I'd have the beams as Anti-cap and everything else with point defence weapons, it's not like a battle between capships is ever going to be decided by anti-cap turrets post FS1.

Edit : The big ones on the Deimos would be good if they carried some kind of long-range Maxim cannon.

Whenever I get the urge to re-arm all the capships, which is quite often. I always put flak on the two-part turrets, and usually remove the blob weapons altogether.

They are indeed quite useless, and they weren't even much use in FS1.

Yea, I always thought the same thing. They dont do much at all.

I wish the GTVA beams hit as much as the Shivan beams. It seems the GTVA beams try to slice while the shivan beams stay in one place. Why is that?

Whenever I played the gauntlet missions on FS1 I would play chicken with the capital ship lasers. I think :V: wanted them to be anti-capital ship weapons judging from their damage rating. If only they would shoot faster they would do pretty well in that department.

Try replacing all the "Turret" lasers with Prometheus S on something like a Deimos. Then try to kill it. You'll get ripped apart in seconds. Even something like a Fenris will seriously beat you up with proper defence weapons.

I think that if the blob turrets fired quickly, they could be quite an effective anti-ship weapon. As-is, they're a waste of space. If they were proper, powerful plasmacaster turrets (like they should be for ship-to-ship weapons), then they'd fire at the same speed or faster, but do much more damage with each shot. They shouldn't be able to hit fighters/bombs if that's the case though....

MatthewPapa: Shivan beams are far more advanced than Vasudan beams, which are more advanced than Terran beams. All Shivan beams fire at a fixed location, whereas only some T-V beams do that (the SGreen, LGreen, BFGreen, LRBGreen, SVas and LVas). The beams on corvettes (TerSlash, VSlash, LTerslash) slash across the target. They tend to damage more systems that way, but do less overall damage than the fixed beams. That said, they fire much faster (once every 10 seconds or so, as opposed to about every 30s for the fixed beams) so the damage is pretty even.

Bloody tedious, more like.

"Oh joy, there's an enemy ship!"

*presses button furiously*

"Yay, it's dead! Oops, there's another one!"

Continue ad infinitum... It'd get boring incredibly quickly. Could work as a one-mission novelty, but you're better off in a fighter anyway, 'cos you can move. :)

I think the GTVA was sort of backed into keeping the blobs...not enough power for more beams, not enough space to store flak ammo.

The Maxim is the ultimate anti-bomb weapon. High rate of fire and long range. When I made a rearmed version of the Iceni for my campaign, I added four Maxim turrets, two forward broadside and two aft broadside, evenly split between port and starboard. Bombs never hit that ship unless you fire from point-blank range.

My greatest pet peeve is the flaks on the Hecate. They're frickin' gigantic. You expect them to fire the uber-weapon of doom...but it's just long range or heavy flak. And worse yet, the turret size on them (and the upper turrets on the Deimos) is such that any beam or bomb hits on the upper side of the ship are almost certain to destroy one.

While I like the look of millions of timy little lasers flying in every which direction in a capship battle, I must concede that they are pretty lame... (Even though I was once killed by them :p)

How effective do you people think flak is as a bomb killing weapon?

Not as effective as we'd hope.

Lasers are the best anti bombs, plus if you have just a few flak, beam, and missile turrets youre gonna be disarmed fast. Scrapping a small beam for 20 or so lasers can be a good investment.
