Hahaha......I thought they took the idea from UFOs. You know, the saucer thingy?  

I think when George Lucas wanted to design starfighters for the Rebel Alliance, he referred to the alphabets for the designs.

The idea for the Enterprise design (originally called "Rocket Ship X-9"   ) cam mostly from working through covers of various sci-fi magazines, and the idea that "We don't know how these drives work, but they surely are dangerous, so let's put them far away from the ships crew."
