TBP Naming Conventions
I have absolutly no idea what Babylon 5 is apart from Googles handy answer of a Sci-fi American TV show.  That isn't my problem, I've been blown away (literally, damn Nials) by what the community has managed to do, but I would like to know how you name names.  I'm guessing EA (Human) ships are fairly simple, pick a ye olde name and apply (Repulse, Dauntless, Hood etc.) except for any Collossus(thinks about spelling)es-i.e. famous ships, guessing the Agammenmon or Agrippa.  The Nimbari I'm not so sure about, or the Narn, or the Centari, or the Trader people....in fact, just the EA I understand.  Any help would be great...or flaming, that is just as helpful.

I recall something about EA omegas being named after figures of the Greek mythology. But that's the only thing that comes in my head now... Or do I mess things up with Freespace...

In the show, Earth ships generally got names similar to what Terran ships get in FS2.  The Omega-class destroyers in particular were christened with the names of Greek mythological figures, though JMS mentions that when President Clark took office he started to give them more "conventional names" like Roanoke and Clarkstown (http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/guide/054.html - see JMS Notes).  Someone around here may also have the link to the website with a list of all Earthforce warships, their names, and their registration letter(s)/number(s).

In TBP I usually name the Omegas in a similar fashion to the show.  Novas I label with the names of figures from military history (Nelson, Patton).  The heavy cruisers and corvettes I usually name after Earth cities, provinces, or countries (Ulaanbaatar, Scapa Flow, Johannesburg).

I'm not sure how you could describe the naming conventions for Minbari, Narn, and Centauri ships.  I usually just make up funny names for the alien ships.  If nothing else you can just make your hand spasm on the keyboard to come up with an alien ship name. :)

Omegas are named based on figures from Greek and Roman history/myth. (Agrippa is Roman history I'm almost certain.)

Olympus corvettes seemed to be named after straights or ports in TBP, I don't know about the show.

Hyperion and Midwinter cruisers seem to be named after a wide variety of things; famous ships of the past, mythological monsters, and cities.

Speaking of naming, do the TBP ships have nameplates ala the Orion, and if so how would we do custom ones?

The Omega does.  Just modify the texture "eaomega01a" to your liking and put it in the data/maps folder.  Using FRED2_Open you can use the Texture Replacement feature to give the Omegas nameplates in game.  They can even have their own custom glow and shine maps.

I know someone very recently modified the Nova's UV mapping to incorporate nameplates as well, but I don't know if the new .pof and textures made it into the R3 Base or not.

Come to think of it, I know tomcat had a layered Photoshop file that made making an Omega nameplate very easy.  This was done before even Release 2 was uploaded a couple of years ago, and I don't know if it made it into the package either...

With the centari you could problaby get away with giving them names such As Royal, Nobel, duke etc sine the centari are a imperial goverment so it makes sense that there names would be like that as with Narns often they have Ja'....... what ever after it somthing like that  has to do with there relgion i think as for the minbari Finger spamsim probaly the best way and/just name a few after any minbari you remember

This might prove useful. The character generator will generate names for various races.

Actually if I remember correctly, the Clarkstown in "Severed Dreams" was a Hyperion Class Cruiser or at that is the one shown when the Alexander fires its Aft Batteries.

The one the Alexander fires apon was a Midwinter, because it fired X-Ray Laser.

And the one in Severed Dreams wasn't seen firing, so it's impossible to say if it's Midwinter or Hyperion.
Acually I can't remember seeing it at all in the Battle, only in Hyperspace and when they jump in.

Yeah, sorry I didn't clarify that.  I meant Clark had adjusted his theme for naming Earth Alliance ships of all classes.

JMS said that it would have required too much time to show what happened to the two heavy cruisers that accompany the Agrippa and Roanoke to Babylon 5, so they were "killed off screen."

The Clarkstown is the Midwinter that is destroyed by the Alexander right at the start of Severed Dreams.

There are 3 Hyperion/Midwinters seen in the main battle sequence/standoff with the mimbari but none of them are seen firing beams (in fact I didn't see them firing at all)

Heh, I don't think they're seen at all after they come through the jumpgate, the exception being the third one that jumps out with the Olympic (Olympus?) and Nimrod.  I don't think the camera ever gets close enough to even get a name off of them.

There used to be a fanmade animaton of the Severed Dreams battle that showed the two heavy cruisers getting nailed, but I can't find it on http://welcome.to/b5animations anymore.

They could at least have shown them 2 seconds firing or one of them exploding.

Mayby with this movie "TMOS" there will be enough time too show such things.
