I'd say it doesn't compare, since the two series are in total different settings. But I liked each one very much. :)
It just depends on your personnal opinion I think. Many have accused Yukikaze of being too obscure in its story, and don't like the character-design. RoD was generally better accepted (due to babe in skimpy outfit in my opinion :D ).

It compares to raed or dir like Star Wars compares to James Bond :doubt

Genryu: well, Yukikaze is a niche series. Realistic dogfights, gloomy characters (really, they all look like they're about going to commit suicide ), and the Jam are more mysterious than the shivans :p
How did you like the whole carrier scenes in the 4th OVA? the "landing" and the "take off"? :p What a show off :D

The "take off" especially is one of my favourite scenes. Rei going after the JAM using the new turbine motors is also very much cool. :)

The combat scenes kick ass, but the story as a whole doesn't make a shred of sense. I watch it for the eye candy. :p

Well, it's true this is the kind of stories where you know more by understanding what is implied, that by plain explanation. Fortunately for me, that's the style of stories I like the best :D
