Hi guys,

I am new to Freespace 2. I have done the first three training missions and then it tries to load whatever is next and the pc drops to desktop. I dont know why. I dont get any error messages.

I have the patched version. I have downloaded the laucher (3.5). Then i downloaded the "Z-pack" MV pack.  I am running all the mods as on with a the texture pack set to high. Its didnt seem to make much difference if I turned the mods off.

My spec is XP1700 cpu (at 200fsbx13 at 1.75v), Epox 8RDA+ Nforce2, 1024 DDR400 Ram (@200mhz), saphire 9800pro flashed to 9800xt WinXP Home. Service pack 2, direct x 9c.

Does any one have any ideas on what the problem is? I would be very grateful for any input.

I also cant seem to get my microsoft forcefeedback 2 joystick to work in game although i can calibrate in windows.

Are you using fs2_open? You *must* have fs2_open for the zpack to work correctly, the same version as the zpack or above. If you're using the 3.6.6 zpack, you'll need to have one of the recent builds. Here are a couple of the most recent:

If you haven't gotten fs2_open yet, I recommend you read this step-by-step list of things to do before you run fs2_open. Since you've already got some things installed, you can replace steps 2 and 3 with "Download and extract 3.6.5 or 3.6.6" and start at step 4. It's about 2/3 of the way down this thread:

This is actually the mv_music.vp bug unless I'm very much mistaken. Either of the two builds WMCoolmon links to will fix it.

As for for the joystick have you tried setting the joystick to force 0 or force 1 etc?

Thanks guys for your quick replies. I really appreciate it.

I have downloaded a new build and that seems to have fixed it. I was using 3.6.5 and runing the game using 3.6.5 launcher. I am gonna try and play the game, hopefully i wont have to post back any probs.

On the joystick front, it works okay using the win32 joystick but not force 0 or force 1. Any ideas?

Hmm. i tried that fs_open_ex.zip and it CTD every time when a capship exploded (though i only checked with aeolus and about dozen times). It happened when the shockwave was supposed to propagating through the hull. And messing with media vps didn't help. Chance back to 3.6.5 did help however.

I got that fs_open_ex from SCP page. And also a question: If i want the old shockwave anis back what do i have to do? It seems that those eff animations overrule anis so is the only way to get inferno shockwaves (i like) back the removal of both effect vps (3.6.6) after extracting everything else to data/effects?

EDIT: I also experience odd crash (everything just stops, and CTDs after Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+F4, Alt+Tab combinations) occasionally when starting the game when i have an active internet connection. If i block it with firewalls then game starts fine with no crashes.

I can get the second lock due to Zone Alarm Pro popping up its "do you want program x to be able to access the internet?" window. You sure that you're not getting something like that?

For the shockwaves I'm afraid that extracting the rest and building your own VP files is your only option for now. You could try turning the inferno versions into EFF's of course. From what DaBrain says it's not hard either.

That second crash really might be something like that.  Never could have seen it though... Perhaps if i let the firewall recognize the fs exe files i could get over it.
