Hello! - And, a problem
(get the banner ready)

Firstly hello, I found this place by accident the other night, and im amazed to see whats going on. I was a huge fan of FS1 and FS2, and i thought the game was dead.

Anyway, I went forward and grabbed all the new things you guys have made, and i must say its great, ive been having fun replaying FS2 again :)

However, i have run into some problems.

I installed the game, and the patch. I have installed the latest SCP version, all the packs for it and everything, in the most part, works great ( I followed the documentation). I have encountered some problems when trying to load missions from the tech room.

When I attempt to load some missions, the game will crash, causing a windows error to pop up saying this program has encountered a problem. This happens during the load screen. Some missions (or, most) work absolutely fine. 2 missions that i have been unable to load: Exodus, As Lightning Fall. These are not the only ones, its just annoying to keep reloading the game to check other missions. Into the Lions Den, Argonautica, High Noon, among others, work.

The game does not crash at any other point, and I am yet to see any other errors of any kind. Using the launcher, it does this with both "All features on" and "Default FS2". I am running it in OpenGL 1024x768, maximum settings. I dislike d3d as the game tends to lag slightly.

I have all the extra vp files downloaded, and in the correct directory, and all ingame effects seem to work correctly.

Specs:
Athlon XP3200
1GB Ram PC 3200
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 5.3 Official Drivers
2x120GB Raid0 drives
Windows XP

And my computer very rarely crashes or anything of that sort.

I bet theres a really easy answer to this  that ive just plain missed though

ingame movies? hmm..

Hello! - And, a problem
What does a debug build say?

Hello! - And, a problem
I just ran it, with both All features on and on normal FS2, but the game doesnt even load, crashes after the SCP splash screen, with the standard windows error.

the errorlog.txt files reports:

fs2_open_d caused an Access Violation in module ntdll.dll at 001b:7c910a0a.
Exception handler called in Freespace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 5/25/2005 02:01:24.
E:\Games\Freespace2\fs2_open_d.exe, run by Colin.
1 processor(s), type 586.
1024 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location cdcdcdca caused an access violation.

Then a lot of addresses, and then the programs running in the background.

Run with the release exe, and crashing on load mission gives:

fs2_open_r caused an Access Violation in module ntdll.dll at 001b:7c91888f.
Exception handler called in Freespace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 5/25/2005 02:03:18.
E:\Games\Freespace2\fs2_open_r.exe, run by Colin.
1 processor(s), type 586.
1024 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location 0cb54390 caused an access violation.

and more addresses.

Whats going on? is that file (ntdll.dll) broken or something?

edit: infact it looks liek im missing something called interface.tbl.. (when in d3d i can see the log window when it crashes- it only crashes on startup like this on the debug version, so the release crash remains unknown to me)

Using PURE D3D DeviceWindow in debugging mode... mouse clicking may cause problems!

Hello! - And, a problem
Usually the ntdll.dll errors are memory related.  Which build are you using?

Don't worry about interface.tbl, it's not required (just don't press F3 on the mainhall).  If it's a movie error then you can disable them in the launcher and try again.

Hello! - And, a problem
3.6.5. fs2_open_r.exe - downloaded from the newest post- May22. Its the only thing I have, i did a fresh FS2 install, ran it to check it worked, patched it, then installedall of this.

Crashes even when the only command being used is allslev..

cant see why.

(the interface error thing was from the fs2_open_d.exe to try to get some more info,  just crashes on startup though with the  normal windows crash message and that in the debug window)

edit-

I have just been playing and I have had two crashes, One when i clicked to loadout on "Endgame" and one during a mission.

something, is wrong :(

You may want to try the -novbo option at the bottom of the Troubleshooting section.  It should reduce crashing in OGL.

Hello! - And, a problem
The error you gave looks like an unitialized pointer was referenced.

if I understand you correctly, that does seem plausable.. but ofcourse im a noob to all this - how can i fix this?

is this a SCP problem or something broken within my configuration ?
Think.

Hello! - And, a problem
After playing with various builds all day I'm getting this crash too but it only seems to happen with Phreak's build.  A pure CVS build works fine.  Not sure what the problem is but I assume that it's just one of Phreak's changes that he hasn't put in CVS yet or it's a bug that got fixed just after his build.

Hello! - And, a problem
If Could you please perhaps link me to a build that you know works? I have tried several, including older ones and the 3 latest, they all do the exact same thing.

Else, where can i download a "Pure CVS" build, though im not sure what that is exactly- the guide didnt mention it.

The game crashes exactly the same on another computer as well.

Im trying to join in here be part of the community, but its damn hard when i cant play the game and cant report valid bugs etc :(

thanks Mr Maniac I dont know why people were so slow :)

*slightly off topic, is FS1 also freeware? since FS2 is I assume FS1 is but you never know :)

*edit

I dont know if its worth looking at, but i believe i followed the instructions just fine, and the game doesnt work(well it does, but not very well). Am i just an idiot? or perhaps theres something wrong? After all, you want more followers i guess, and if it causes everyone such problems they may lose interest.

CVS is a system to "manage" Sourcecode...
And where to get a "pure" CVS-Build?
Well... I could send you one for Linux but for Windows you would have to build it yourself... Or you have to find someone who can do it!

As for your crashes: Maybe you'll just have to wait a bit...
The coders are working hard and Changes are made almost every day...

Hello! - And, a problem
ok :)

i do appreciate the coders work and theyre spending their time on this, just thought it seemed a touch odd i seemed to be the only one with the problem. As long as they know about it, its fine i guess- Im playing the FS2 campaign with all FS2_Open files moved out atm :)

I hope it gets fixed soon , I want to finish the campaign with FS2_Open :)

In the mean time, are there any sites with good campaigns or new bits and bobs? i saw some pictures of brilliant player made models like Bablyon5, star trek ships and stuff, however i saw no links to missions or campaigns including these.. I appreciate its an old game, ive found a few sites that are 5 years out of date and such, so i was wondering if anyone could recommend anything :x

Hello! - And, a problem

Hello! - And, a problem
Was the music in the launcher set to try EAX? I remember that caused me lots of problem, even in regular FS2.

And welcome to HLP. :)
- Eddie Kent Woo, Setekh, Steak (of Steaks), AWACS. Seriously, just pick one.

Hello! - And, a problem
Nah, both EAX and directsound did it. might fiddle about to try get music working, but im not at all fussed by it.

Look in the campaigns forum for Skippy's list. It'll contain proper links.

Some good things to look for:
Derelict
Warzone
BWO Demo

The B5 ships are from The Babylon Project, a total conversion.
