ai.tbl limits, FRED, and wierd characters

When I try and increase the number of AI classes in AI table past 8 the AI class names start appearing incorrectly in FRED. Appearing as a seemingly random collection of characters. As if it's trying to print a string at some point in memory where there isn't one.

Is this a known problem or something I am doing wrong?
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

Sounds like they may be hardcoded at 8:mad:
