My second idea: Freespace Commander
Yeah, I got a new idea. It looks like my first idea won't be worked on for a while, but this one might be easier.

An RTS mission for Freespace. This mission will use the no-bank stuff for all ships. The player will be on the highest level, so he can see the whole 'battlefield'. The player ship is a ship without model, guns, subsystems. It's like the observer mode in multiplayer. But you can't fly up or down.

Now you command your fleet via comm orders. Maybe you can build new ships somehow. (See my first idea.)

Interesting. It'd be rather limited, though - the only things you can tell most ships to do are attack a target or depart. Either it'd require messing with the AI (which will make ships behave very strangely indeed) or you'd have to set up some sort of grid pattern with nav bouys and stuff, use waypoints and distance sexps and use keypresses to tell ships where to go. It'd be very tricky to get right...
Any fool can pull a trigger...

Yupp. I'm no FREDer but I've played around with it a bit.

I think you'll be glad to hear one of my mods is going to put that feature into good use. :)

Well you just have to assign your fighter wings to perform special tasks. A capital ship has no chance against a wing of bombers without fighter cover. :)

Maybe one mission goal could be to diable a ship. Or something like that. ;)


I think it could be pretty funny.

Edit: You can select ships like in most RTS games already. Just move the crossair on you traget and press the 'select target' key.

Did I ever code in a ships.tbl field to set the viewer distance for that? Or did you work around that?

I don't think you did. But we'll mostly be using force-perspective when we're using it anyway.

Say, would it at all be possible to code something in to exempt specific ships from 2D movement? :)
