Sol: A History problems - am i just a bad pilot?
I've been playing this campagin recently, and i really like the story, but I keep having problems with completing the missions.   It seems like no matter how hard i try, i can't protect any friendlies.

I already had to cheat past one mission by FREDing a Cv's health to 20 times what it was before, and the thing still got down to like 75% life.  On that mission i was able to protect it up to the point where 2 cruisers with beams jumped in and did 25% to it instantly and killed it.

It just seems like no matter how many bombers i shoot down, they wont stop coming.

I'm currently stuck on the mission where you have to protect the 3 installations on the maginot line (in the 4th campaign) and it got the point where i was sitting on top of the Destroyer's fighter bay killing endless streams of Ursas and Medusas.  The last time i tried i almost hit 40 kills overall before all my wingmen died and i got killed by a swarm of enemy interceptors.

On top of the endless waves of bombers and fighters, the damn Destroyer's beam cannons ensure that I'll never be able to protect the 3 installations, because even if i try to kill its turrets, the bombers start running amok

HOW THE ******* DO I BEAT THIS MISSION!?  Is it just that I'm a terrible pilot, or is there some trick that I'm missing?  :(

Are you playing on Easy/ Very Easy? If you're struggling, you should switch down to a lower difficulty setting if you can.

I haven't played Sol: A History, but when you're playing a defensive mission, you have to prioritise your targets carefully, and use your wingmen to their full effect. For example: if your objective is being attacked by both bombers and capital ships, you can send your wingmen after one of the targets (probably the bombers), and then use Trebuchet missiles (or the equivalent) to destroy the capships' beam cannons quickly. Then you can concentrate on the bombers with your wingmen. A good rule to bear in mind is this: You are the equivalent of 3 or 4 of your wingmen. You can do one task, and each wing you have in support can do one each. Allocate tasks depending on the wingmen's fighter types, weapons loadouts etc. and check to se how they're doing every so often.

One final question: Have you completed the main FS2 campaign? If you can finish it on Medium then you're doing fine. It may just be that S:AH is a beast of a campaign in terms of difficulty - there are some about...

I dont have access to trebuchet or equivelants, as its a scramble mission and im in an interceptor with pathetic weapons(equivalent of 1 Subach mount and 2 Prom-S mounts, with 16 less capable harpoons things).

my wingmen are needed to keep fighters from killing me, if i tell them to kill the bombers then they fail and the stations start dying.  and they eventually all die anyway, probobly about 5 minutes in.  Farthest I've managed to get is almost 10 minutes in.

I've beaten the FS2 main campaign on hard, and I'm playing this campaign on the default setting (easy)

Perhaps your right about the difficulty...Maybe I'll just give myself more wingmen in FRED so I can not be alone after 5 minutes....but that makes me feel like I'm cheating...

gaaaaaah

Yeah, Blaise Russel's campaigns tend to be balanced on the hard side.  I would suggest Easy, except if that's what you're playing it on... then... erm.

Complain to Blaise Russel. :)

I just opened it up in FRED (making no changes) to see how many enemies there were and to check all the arrival conditions etc, then saved it.  Suprisingly, there are less enemies than my kill tally from the last time I tried...

I played the mission again and beat it easily in about 2.5 minutes

previously i had lived to almost 10 minutes killing an average of 4 bombers and 1 fighter every 20 seconds or so...

perhaps something was corrupted with the mission earlier and opening and saving it in FRED fixed it....I figured trying that wouldnt hurt anything, and amazingly my problem was solved.

I know something was wrong now because checking the arrival strings, multiple bomber wings should not have been spawning like they did....I was facing 3 wings of bombers each deployment previously, mixed between ursa's and medusas and this time that wasn't the case...also, Ulysese (spelling?) fighters were spawning like crazy before, and i fought maybe 4 this time around.

Problem solved, and my self confidence is back.
(Yes, i had all the .vps and required data files in the right folders when i opened it in FRED, No i didnt corrupt anything out of existance...except for fixing the error somehow)

They are indeed. Homesick was a b1tch at times. But then I probably just suck.

Divine Wind: That's weird. I've no idea what could have caused that... At least it's fixed now.
