How to properly add ship models?
I'm currently going through Sync, and I just got to the part where I'm supposed to see the new type of destroyer (a user made destroyer), and the object appears as a ullysses class fighter.  I added the ship .pof model file to the the main FS2 directory, and to the \data\models directory.  What am I doing wrong?  Also...d oes it require a table modification, if so... how do I do that?

Okay First this is a little lost here as it really belongs in the Campaigns forum but let's take a look.

I can only think of a couple of things that could cause you this problem.

1) You aren't running the game properly. Transcend should be in a folder called Transcend in your main FS2 folder. You then run the launcher and use the select mod button to pick the folder.

2) You have a rogue table file. Open up your FS2 folder and do a search for anything with the .tbl suffix. If you find anything with that in your Freespace2, Data (or any subdirectories thereof) or Transcend folder (Or any subdirectories thereof) rename them to *.tblDISABLED.

That works too but it's better to diable the files so that you have a clue as to what is the cause when a different mod goes wrong :)

hrmmm, i dont' seem to have any .tbl files in my directory, yet i keep having the problem.  I also have used the launcher to select the mod i'm playing, no luck.  Any other suggestions, I have yet to see a single custom ship and i'm playing my 4th custom campaign.

Also... about the launcher.  I asked in anohter thread, but I can't find the thread and it was an off topic question anyway, so maybe it fits better here.  Do you need to update the launcher with newer versions of FSO?  The only launcher I can find is the one I downloaded a whiel ago for an old version of FSO.

Thanks

There's a new version of the launcher in the SCP forum right now :)

You don't really need to keep updating any more (You used to). 5.2 should work with any build that came out in the last year, so make sure you have that at least. 5.3 (The new version) should be just as general and it also has some cool mod related functions that make it worth downloading though :)

If you're not seeing any custom ships then you're probably installing your mods incorrectly.

This is how you should be doing it.

1) Make sure your Freespace 2 folder is clear of rogue files of any sort. \Data should only contain files in a few folders  like FREDdocs, Players etc. There shouldn't be anything in the big mod releated folders (Effects, tables, maps, models).

2) Make a new folder named after your mod. Make sure it has no spaces or hyphens in it. This folder will be refered to from now on as < moddir >.

3) If the mod has any vp files put them in moddir.

4) Create a folder called data in moddir. If the mod has any non VP files this is where they go. If the mod has instructions for installing to Freespace2\Data you follow them but install to moddir\Data instead.

5) Run the launcher and press the select mod button. Choose moddir. Do NOT choose moddir\Data.

How to properly add ship models?
hrmm, ok.  I made all the changes you said, and I believe I have the mods workign properly now.  However, I tried to play Inferno (i suppose this is a non-SCP mod), and ran into the same issue.  The mod works (i ran it with the leftover link to my original FS install), and some of the custom ships work as well, but not all.  Everything else works (the mission breifings, some of the models, techroom, hud changes, effects changes, etc)  I'm wondering if this is just because its a non-SCP mod and I still have my SCP stuff in the same directory (i did move the mv_*.vps out though, only the launchers and .exes remain).

In any case, to run inferno, should I insert another install of FS2 on my computer and just use that for mods like Inferno and SAH that don't use SCP?  And is there anything else I could be doing wrong... i find it odd that everything works except a few of the new models.

Also, I did see that there is an SCP patch for inferno on the inferno homepage, but the link to the fileplanet download is gone.  Anyone know where I can get another copy of that patch?

Thanks

Freespace doesn't like being installed on anything over than Drive C, if I remember correct. Multiple installs shouldn't be necessary anyway.

Ehh, I've never installed Freespace2 to drive C and never had a problem.

Hell, I've simply not installed Freespace2 and just copied over the VP files and not had much problem getting it (and SCP) running. :p

I've never been of the school of thought that agreed with multiple installs (In fact I hate them so much that I run TBP as a mod even though it's meant to be a stand alone :D )

Quite frankly with the new features in FS2_Open and launcher 5.3 there is absolutely no need to ever do a second install.

I've run Inferno on the SCP with no problems (admittedly that was a while back).

Before doing a second install I would simply reinstall FS2 after backing up my mods. Then by installing them carefully you could probably avoid the whole problem.

No idea where the patch is. Hopefully one of the Inferno boys can tell you. They might have a link on their forums too.
