wierd keyboard control problems
I am ALMOST done with Freespace 1, and i'm at the part where you enter subspace and destroy the lucifer's reactors.  The problem is my controls (and i might add its been doing this since ive started playing the game) just like stop!  They get backed up and they start doing things i told it to do about 10 to 15 seconds ago!  I cant deal with this because I only get 48% hull integrity with no shields in subspace!  I dont know how to fix it!  I tried the 1.06 patch, and it still does it.  what should i do?  help? anyone?  I'm using a USB Keyboard, Wireless on the keyboard and mouse, Anti Virus and Firewall (mcafee) is disabled, tried with no cd in the drive, and im running XP Pro, running freespace 1 in compatibility mode for windows 95.  I'll try 98 and let you know if it works.

Does your keyboard work normally in other things?  Have you tried using a different keyboard?  What happens if you don't run in compatibility mode?

I'd say try running without compatibility mode

Windows XP is based on the NT operating system.

By running in compatibility mode for 95 or 98, your making your OS "revert" to the quirks of said operating systems.  Plus, your keyboard drivers were designed to run in an XP environment, not 98\95 runtime.  That could be causing the problem.  Just run normally in XP and it will be fine.

Other than that, the only other thing I can think of is a problem with the keyboard itself, but I doubt that's the case.

Trust me, I'm A+ certified.  This is what I do. ;)

yea but if i disable the compatibility mode, then the afterburners dont work.  I need to run it in Compatibility mode for them to work, the patches dont do a thing.

So much for the quick fix...

All right, I have XP Home which is no different from Pro w\the exception of Networking tools so I think I can help in troubleshooting and diagnosis.  I'll need the answers to these first:

What type of Freespace are you playing? i.e. download, disks, etc.

Are there any other options turned on under the compatability tab?  If so, what?

What are your video Settings in the FS setup dialog box?

I don't know if it's related but I once had a problem similar to yours in which all the controls would freeze after a few minutes.  The solution involved rolling back my Video card driver.  back then I had an nvidia MX 2000 overclocked to 4000 drivers.  Rolled it back and it worked fine.  So there is the possibility that your Video card isn't 100% compatible with FS1 due to the fact that it is so advanced.  So if you're overclocking, try rolling it back to your original driver and it might work, if not, then the video card is may be too advanced.  However, only assume this if nothing else works.

This may seem obvious but what about checking to see that your keyboard's drivers are up-to-date?

Ok.........

As for it being my keyboard, no its got brand new batteries and it works fine with FS2.  I have the Nvidia 77.76 BETA Driver, but I'm not using the 71.89 Driver cause its lame, and the 77.72 driver screwed up like 5 other games that i had.  I am not, repeat NOT USING PORT!

Ok I'm using Freespace Version 1.04, RETAIL (says in the main hall of the game). The video card is not overclocked.  the drivers i have are for geforce cards, and I do not have the overcl0cker installed for the card.  No there is no other option in the compatibility checked on.  As i said before, if i dont run in compatibility mode, then theres no afterburner capabilities.  The video card box says Direct 3D - Primary Display Driver, interlaced cutscenes and fast clear for cutscenes is NOT checked.  I can check for my keyboard drivers.  Should I install the logitech suite that came with the keyboard?  I dont think it does anything, besides it says on thier website that it only enables special hot key capabilities.

I hate to say it, but it may be the fact that you have the BETA Driver.  These drivers are experimental and typically can cause undesired frustration.

I have a Geforce 5500 FX PCI card and it + default drivers and it works fine.  Try the other drivers just for the last level.  You can switch back once your done or if they don't work.  I know they're lame, but not all current drivers are backwards compatible.

For what it's worth, I played through FS1 myself very recently. I used version 1.06 (although with the 1.04 silent threat VP) and I had it on compatibility mode to fix the afterburner issue, but didn't run into any problems otherwise. My keyboard and mouse are both connected through PS2 and I am running the XG 77.13 nvidia drivers.

Modded drivers. They provide slightly better IQ and performance than the official drivers, although the differences are quite small. The 77.13 one I have is actually somewhat outdated, but it is a hair faster than most of the newer betas and has no compatibility problems so I'm sticking with it.

Anyway, your problem doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the video card or its drivers. If you have an old, wired PS2 keyboard lying around, you could give it a try.

yeah, I have been looking to get a USB keyboard for the same reason, but haven't had time to go to a local BB or something to look at the choices. Maybe I will go this weekend. I use PS2 for the mouse since it allows for a higher report rate than USB.

Go with what CP said.  It's the only other thing possible.  If its not the video driver, it may be the fact you're using the USB slot for your keyboard.  If it is switchable, use it in P\S 2 mode.  In fact, now that I think of it, back when FS1 was crashing for me, I had a USB mouse.  Odd.  When I rolled back the drivers I also had gone back to a regular mouse.

Go fig.

Personally, I don't see the point to using a USB mouse or keyboard.  Why take up a USB slot when there is already a perfectly good P\S 2 already designed for it.  sure, you lose a few keys that can be held down at once.  But to me that's a trivial matter.

I find that very annoying in FPS games, since I basically can't do diagonal jumps with my preferred key bindings. I used to have a USB keyboard for some years, but the spacebar mechanism sort of broke a few months ago so I had to dump it. At the moment I have just mapped one of the eight mouse buttons to jumping, but that's cumbersome compared to what I am used to. I have ten USB ports anyway and the only other thing they are used for is a single flash drive, so I might as well.

How many keys are you pressing?:wtf:

at the most three are necessary which is within the limits of a P\S 2 keyboard.

For me anyways...:nervous:

yeah I use three, but not all combinations of three work. Stuff like 0, 7, 8 or 0, 8, 9 (NW and NE jumps for me) on the numeric pad causes the motherboard to beep.
