I apparently have got the W32/Magistr@mm virus thanks to some doss mate from Uni  

I can;t find a fix offhand, nor afford a decent anti-viral program, so if anyone knows of a freeware / shareware / stand-alone solution please contact me via e-mail or by rpelying!

And for gods' sake don't open any attchments in any E-mail i may send!  This one looks like a nasty little ****er, it's already wrecked most of my main modding files

What a coincidence. My dad got the very same virus on his computar macheene when I was visiting his place.

I fixed it somehow... can't remember how. I think I downloaded a demo of Symantec's anti-virus software. Fixed it right up.

just go to the McAfee or Symantec sites and see if there is a cure that doesn't involve spending £30 on a 1 year license for a virus scanner

nope  

I'm d/l ing the demo, but i can get McAfee for free through my University - when i go back in October.

It seems to screw up exe files, apparently, so i can't use cob2gs2 or install Kazans' tools.

Um, guys? My fiancee is a virus tech for Symantec and one thing I can tell you  is that Anti-virus software WILL NOT help you once you have a virus. Norton Anti-Virus states on the box that you shouldn't install it at all if you think you're infected.
That said, symantec's site does have massive amounts of free information on how to remove just about any virus out there. Once you've done that, I STRONGLY reccomend purchasing/borrowing/acquiring Norton AntiVirus. It costs some money, but not as much as getting your computer nuked will cost you. The new one, sircam, is capable of COMPLETELY wiping your HD.

It won't help IF the virus has activated. If it's still laying dormant, as this one does for a while, a good anti-virus program can disinfect the files, and if not, at least recognise the infected files and remove them.
