Wonderful, just wonderful.....

Well, lets see... where to start.

Last night, I notice that my desktop started acting a bit odd. At first, it was just running a bit slow. No biggie, right? So I just kill some background programs and go back to WoW. Things I back to normal for an hour I wanna say. Thern the **** began to hit the fan. Whenever I would press the Shift key, odd things happened. In the game, it would do some odd things like open my character sheet, start a chat, que up some of my hotkeys, use potions, etc. So after about fifteen minuts of dealing with it, I was like 'ok, got a virus.... great'. So I log and quit the game to run  scan.

While I run scan I decide to check out some sites for virus info, to see if anything like this has poppe up. So, I decide to use the Shift key again in notepad to get some examples of what comes up. Well, it started something new.... It opened WMP and tried to play something that wasnt there. So I was like.... great. Well, I let the scan run and it found a Trojan or two that I missed last week. No biggie so I have it contain and delete them and by this time, it was about 1am-ish so I decie to go to bed.

Well, I got home from work today and booted up my computer. Things are worse. Much worse. For starters, the Trojans I got rid of had nothing to do with whatever was going on, and on top of that, other keys are acting odd. Escp opened up my start menu, I think F selected everything on my desktop, H or J opene up help menus and a whole mess of other things. I was sick of it, so I was like 'reformat time'. I reformated, and things looked all hunkey dorie until I press Shift.... It was still spouting off odd things! And, to make matters worse, I cant seem to detect my Network card....


Guys, help.

You don't happen to have an old keyboard lying around, do you?  If you reformatted and the problem still persists, I'd start debugging the hardware.

And you may very well just need to get the install disks for your network card.  Of all the things that XP tends to not recognise, it's ethernet cards made in the last 3 years.

If you had removed viruses and trojans when you reformatted your hard drive or volume where your OS resides, do you have viruses or trojans on other voulmes as well?  you might have to sanitize your entire hard disk (meaning do a full format, not a quick, and format all volumes as well if you have multiple volumes, and make sure your backups are completely virus free.  Otherwise you're back to re-infecting yourself again.  
But it DOES sound like a hardware problem to me, as I've had similar results after spilling water in my keyboard.  I thought i'd let it sit and dry for a couple of days while using another board.  when i hooked up the recently waterlogged one, if i pressed one key it was like i pressed that key and the keys next to it.  Sometimes the PC speaker would beep too just like when you press too many keys down at once.  Try another board, and if possible, for example, if your current board is USB, try finding a PS2 keyboard and see if the problem goes away.  (Mx-1000 mice are notorious for goofing up in USB mode)
