how to install on os x?
The README file says:
Installation assumes that you already have the game data installed somewhere on you hard drive.
You will need the original Freespace 2 data files to play this version.  You may be able to find these files
elsewhere but that is not a topic that will be discussed here.

I do indeed have the original data files, but the thing is, Freespace 2 was a Windows game.  Unsurprisingly, the installer does not run on the Mac.  I can't copy the files from a Windows machine - I no longer allow any Microsoft crap in my house.  So how am I supposed to get the data off the CDs and onto my hard drive?  I have tried cabextract but it does not seem able to read these cab files.  I tried unshield but it will not compile on the Mac.  Saying "it will not be discussed" is hardly useful when this info is absolutely essential to run the game!  In fact I would suggest that the README provide step by instructions rather than assuming we already know how to do it.

"it will not be discussed" is there since I don't want to piss off the Volition guys that were interested in the OS X release.  But as WMCoolmon points out there is plenty of info around here to get the data without needed the original discs.

There aren't step-by-step installation instructions for unshield since a GUI installer for OS X is in the works.  It will be able to install from the original Windows discs without having to manually do anything but point-and-click a few times.  No ETA on that but I'm working on it and a GUI configuration tool at the same time.

For now though, here is a pre-compiled version of unshield for you: http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/unshield-bin.tar.gz

It should work on 10.2.8 and higher.
