The more I realize how great it really is that (*gulp* here goes nothing)... there never was a Freespace 3. Sure, some closure to the series would be most satisfying instead of the gaping hole where the end should be, but beyond that hole now lies something we never could have imagined when we first gawked at that those last ending videos to Freespace 2. If there had been an FS3, would the series be more widely known? Perhaps... But what about everything we see here? If there was an FS3, would the fans have petitioned for the source code? If so, would Volition have released it?
Now nobody can answer that with absolute certainty, but I highly doubt it would have happened. After all, we'd have the 3rd chaper of the saga and if it finally tied up the loose ends, we'd probably be content with what we had. Sure, there'd still be modding and campaigns and so on, but I don't see how there would be the same drive that exists among us now. FS3 would have brought closure to the series, but the true beauty of Freespace now is that it is no longer about closure. Many different campaigns take their own stab at continuing the story while others branch off in new directions or replicate entirely seperate universes, and all the while, the game itself is no longer closed but constantly being improved upon, not only visually but in its capacity to allow further creativity on the part of those who mod for it. I think we all need to give the big V a hand for not finishing this series, as at least I don't ever want it to be totally complete.
