VoIP (XP Not recognising a USB Device)
Alright, save me here lads.

I've already e-mailed the company I bought the phone off, but since it's saturday I don't hold out much hope of an answer!

I'm connecting a USB VoIP phone to my XP box. It's one of these embedded-driver deals where the phone just plugs in, and is usable - no software driver to install. XP however seems to disagree and as soon as the phone is connected tries to search for a driver on my local media or windows update. Understandably I was upset about this, but went along for the ride.

Unfortunately it found no such driver, and no matter how many times I switch USB port or activate a random system service I cannot get the damned thing to work. ]

Has anyone else had similar problems with other USB devices?

You tried if other USB devices work? If at all possible, try a device you haven't had plugged since you installed Windows. You tried any other USB ports? You tried the phone on another computer?

Have you looked for drivers?

I've narrowed things down a bit since earlier. I tried reinstalling my USB printer and I got the same problem (well, kinda, it couldn't find the actual drivers on my hard drive).

Basically it looks like Windows Hardware Wizard is ****ed. Anyone know how to repair without the pain of a full XP repair?

sfc /scannow can fix it, but only if the problem lies in the system files, not in the registry. Then your best bet is to repair installation, just be prepared to format your XP partition just in a case.

What's the actual make and model of the USB phone? If the drivers are supposed to be embedded in the OS then it's possible that the INF file that would normally be used is corrupt. You might want to try asking around on some VoIP forums, too.

Copied all the INF files from my fathers install and suddenly things work. :)
