Try a debug build (./configure --enable-debug) and you should get some sort of error message either in the terminal window or in ~/.fs2_open/data/fs2_open.log.  Typically when you see this sort of problem it's unable to find some of the needed data (missing/corrupt retail VPs, etc.).

Tryed the debug build and no errors at all - not even a log file  :(. Only a screen flick.
