hello,

I've browsed the forum and cant find anything about this, so I'm sorry if its been asked before - for some reason i am unable to use the search :(

I'm using a pretty decent system (dual opteron 248s / PCIe 6600GT / 3GB RAM on K8WE motherboard)

but I am seeing a "not enough RAM" error when clicking "run" on the launcher(5.2) for 3.6.5 . Am I missing something?

I'm running XP_64... is that the problem?

Thanks,

Sloth out

I'm no expert at all but sometime ago I remember reading something about problems with SCP in dual core systems.

OTOH, why don't you update to latest official version (3.6.7. media_vp's, 3.6.7. exes and 5.3 launcher)? Or even to beta 3.6.8.?

For latest oficial builds and vps: http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php

For latest and current builds, (they're beta but usually pretty stable), see "Recent Builds" >> "CVS Builds" (Sorry I don't know how to insert the link to the forums).

For beta media_vp 3.6.8., see "The Freespace Upgrade Project" forum.

Please notice that 3.6.8. media_vp's and latest exes are not compatible with previous versions (3.6.7. or older).

If the problem is caused by dual core crash you can try setting Processor Affinity for the fs_open.exe. (I had this problem with RegCleaner 4.3 and my HyperThreading P4). The process to follow is very well explained in TweakGuides Tweaking Companion Version 3.0 guide. You can obtain it in http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html, and you only need the regular and free version. The process involves using ImageCFG.exe (a Windows NT utility) that you can download from http://www.robpol86.com/Pages/imagecfg.php. Read the Guide for step by step process or even the ImageCFG download web.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

I wouldn't bother downloading a program to set processor affinity. You can do it from task manager. Or just get a CVS build from the recent builds forum and use that instead (3.6.7 suffers from the same problem with dual core processors).

But with ImageCFG you can set up the exe so you don't need to select the processor affinity every time you run the program. And if I've been able to use it, I think nearly a #onkey can do it, (change # with the letter you prefer) ;)

Yeah but seeing as this is a problem that will not be present in the next official build or any recent CVS build it might be overkill in this situation. :)

hello again

The latest build hasnt made any difference - even if I set procesor affinity to just cpu0.

Any other ideas?

also... now I get the "failed to read flag file" directly after the "not enough ram" message.

I have donwloaded and installed the openAl link from the flag file sticky, but it doesn't seem to be working. I am running an nForce 4 chipset - I'm sure I can remember reading something about nvidia and openAL, but I cant find it now :(

cheers for the help,

Yeah there is something about nvidia and creative OpenAL drivers being different but I can't remember the full story either.
