Re: has one of you people tried Freespace 2 on Win
Some people here have those and as far as I know, it works fine as long as you set the processor affinity so that the program only uses one core.

AMD 64bit Athlon 3200+ here. Works fine, although for example the build provided with The Babylon Project 3.2 core frequently crashes. The fs2_open_367_p4.exe works very well, being optimized for P4/AMD64 processors. Also at least some new builds work just fine, like the one provided with Heat'Em Up Demo campaign (don't remember the name right now)... Haven't really had any trouble, adveffects work quite smoothly, actually the only thing that sometimes slows the game a bit are multiple shockwaves, like flying through heavy flak fire and having an exploding ship on the field of view simultaneously...
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

FS2 works fine on Windows XP Professional with Sp2 here, i however never tried Vista so i can't say about that one.

Re: has one of you people tried Freespace 2 on Windows XP or Vista?
Wow, I came looking for info on if FS2 Retail works on XP as I am getting the following system currently being set up

AMD Athlon 64bit 3400+
Gigabyte K8nsXP Pro Series Motherbrd
Pc3200 2 (512 MB) Gigabyte total match pairs Memory
GeForce NVida 6600 GT AGP Vid Crd
Audigy ZS2 Snd Crd
Maxtor 300 GB Sata Drive
Windows XP Pro

and was wondering if it would play FS 2 Retail, will I have the dual core problem?
I want to play FS REtail first before I upgrade if possible, to get the flavor of the
original and then see all the great changes the community has done, BUT I may
try to do the full install of FS Open and the FS1 Port so that I can actaully start with
the first campaings in FS1, and work up.

I still need a lot of training, I am definitely NOT a great three D pilot, not yet...

I tried to load FS2 Retail on my older platform which I use to study older games,
which is a

Pentium III Coppermine 1.1 Ghz Dell Dimension 4100
40 GB Hrd Drive, 512 RAM,
GeForce FX 5500 Vid Crd with 256 RAM
Audigy ZS2 Snd Card
Windows 98 SE

It loaded from the CD's fine, and i got that intro movie about Descent III, can that
be turned off by the way?  and then the first screen of the maker, and then......
everything froze up and crashed.  :eek2:  Just got my system back up, but I am afraid now
to run it, even though I thought FS2 was created to run on Windows 98 SE at
640 x 480 32 Bit? Am i wrong?  I still am not sure why my system crashed but
dont want to have to reload everything again!

Anyway, I am puzzled but plan to persevere. Would appreciate any hints re the
XP tweaks I may need to do from the Masters here.

Re: has one of you people tried Freespace 2 on Win
I had for a long time a problem with firewalls and freespace.. as everytime i started the game the firewall inquired the network access rights for the FS exe.. while the game loading screen stayed on top and game seemed to have crashed (non-responsive)... Make sure you are not having that problem too...

Re: has one of you people tried Freespace 2 on Windows XP or Vista?
Hello, sorry if I haven't really introduced myself to the forum before... by my post count, you can probably tell i'm yet another one of those loathesome newbies that every forum gets every now and then... and even more so given that i've been trying to read up on all the updates FS2 has gotten since its heyday (back when Volition still existed to some extent O_o)... I used to play it a lot and i've been wanting to install my FS2 discs in my computer (I have the old retail version, no special editon thingies or anything of the like) but I haven't been able to do so >_<

This, I can certainly tell you, has been INCREASINGLY frustrating for me because i've tried to search the internet for a solution to my plight (a little Bosch reference there), but to no avail. My computer specs are:

Intel P4 2.4 GHz
nVidia GForce FX 5600 Ultra (I really need to change this thing)
1 Gig of RAM
WinXP Pro, SP2

I don't think the sound card is too relevant in this case... since what's really been bothering me is the OS part of this setup... given that SP2 won't run the CDs O_O So my FS2 ISN'T compatible with WinXP Pro SP2... I have no idea what to do... if any person in here could give me some advice, a helping hand... an alternate solution or at least give me a hint as to what I can do, i'll be VERY grateful. (I'll give you a web cookie! :p)

Still... it'd be nice to know if I could somehow download a compatible version... or if any of the new projects that have been in development in the recent years could help me with this or anything of the like.

Thank you VERY VERY much in advance o_o

Re: has one of you people tried Freespace 2 on Win
Let me guess. "system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications", right? If so check out my FAQ for the solution.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/fs2-technical.html#autoexec

If not what error does it give you? Worst comes to worst you can follow the link to the HotU download and install that instead but we might be able to fix your problem and save you the download.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.
