Okay, I dont know if this is an intentioal feature or a bug or something...

Sometimes when I'm playing, all of a sudden, my screen will black out. However, my HUD is still there. I can see that I've suffered explosion damage, as the words BLAST are blinking in the middle of my screen.

I can hear the sounds of my actions, such as using the afterburners or firing weapons, but I don't know if I'm actually performing them. I can target things, but they dont move, nor does their status update.

What's going on?

If it matters, in the instances where this happened, my ship is invulnerable.

:wtf: Weird...

Does this happen ONLY when you're caught in an explosion, or does it happen when you are shot, or get some other damage? And how long does it last?

But you said that you see the explosion indicator so I just assumed .. Never mind...

Can you tell what causes it? I mean what you do when this blackout happens. Can you connect it to something happening around you (beam fireing, ship xplodin, Sinclairs duck). Your system specs might also help. Are you playing in OpenGL? Give us more info.

Unless someone with a brain can tell you what's causing it, you might try reinstall.

I think that is suppose to happen.  It is part of the realism of the game.  When you you are pulling a certain amount of G-forces in real life you will start to either black out to get so much blood rushing to your head that you can't see, it depends on the direction of your aircraft (or spacecraft in the case of space or B5).

black outs are a big problem for pilots.  I remember reading a lot about that sort of thing happening during world war II, pilots would fly their planes to hard, pulling so many g forces that that they would black out in a few seconds and crash.

Blackouts may be a real life thing resulting from G-Forces, but FSO isn't coded to include them (at this time), so Dwin's experiences are not the norm and thus a bug.  As to where the problem exists, I'm not sure.  What models were in play when this occured (including what ship you were flying).
