Longtime, upgrading player has a few questions...
First off, I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed the hell out of both vanilla fs2 and fs_open for many, many years using only my keyboard to play (i just put in an order for a good joystick, specifically for fs2 :p). Thanks to everyone who's done such great work here, there's no way I could ever have the patience or skill to do what you guys do.  Now, on to the me-asking-you-about/for-stuff. :nervous:

I've been playing with 3.6.7 for a while now and want to upgrade. I think, after careful consideration, that 3.6.9 RC6 is the best option, with the 3.6.8 zeta vps and patches. But before I install I have a question. I hear that most people install the media vps to a seperate folder. I intalled to my root fs2 directory. Is that bad (other than the fact that messed up vps will mess up other stuff)? Am I suffering from a drop in graphics quality because of that or will my game look like the pretty screenshots if i install the new vp's to my root directory? Also, if i have to select the a media vp folder with the MOD tab, how do I run mods with pretty graphics (i've just discovered mods).

After I get your advice, I'll upgrade, then probably be back for more help. Thanks in advance, whoever responds.

Oh, and "hi!"

Technically, installing into root folder won't hurt anything except organization. People install it to a separate folder mainly for tidiness. That way, when you want to upgrade media vp files themselves, you can simply delete everything in that folder then put the newer vp files in. 100% clean guaranteed.

In the case of a mod, there's usually an ini file that comes with the mod. All you need to do is put the name of the folder containing all media vp files under the "secondary" entry. For example, if the folder that contains the media files is named "mediavps", then put mediavps there.

command: gunnery control, commence plasma core insertion!
gunner: uhmm uhh huh, he said insert

:welcome:

welcome to the hlpbb, exits are to the sides and to the rear. the airlocks are kinda broken, as the v gods have been using them for target practice again. i wouldnt risk my life on one. flame throwers may be found under the seats, but due to, the war in iraq, and the rising petrolium prices, and our gunners masturbation habbits, tne napalm has been replaced with holy water, at least thats what i hope it is. shotguns and plasma cannons may be found in the weapons lockers, but only [V], the admins, and a hyper intelegent of blue have the knoledge to decode the inscriptions that lock such seals. should you find yourself in the air ducts and hear a rattling noice, thats probibly the resident shivan, carl. assuming hes not angry from running into a gatling trap, you should be able to get away by tossing him your lunch. it is herasy to use the letters f, s, and 3 in the same word, prosecuters will be whipped, burned at the steak, and put out with hoply water before death. enjoy your stay :D

That's what you should have in your main folder before installing FS2_Open. After upgrading the vps you see in that picture are all you should have in the main folder too (since if you were sensible you installed to the mediavps folder).

If you have no other mods installed you should delete or move any VP files that aren't in that pic.

Re: Longtime, upgrading player has a few questions...
Thanks, for the help and the welcome. I upgraded successfully to 3.6.9 r6. Kind of.  :wtf:
When I started it up, it informed me that I need OpenGL 1.2, rather than the 1.1 that my driver currently supports. Very well, I thought, I'd simply upgrade my driver. Simple enough, right? If only... I got the official Dell Drivers, those didn't help. Still 1.1. Then I got the Omega drivers (based on catalyst 6.5, maybe?). Still 1.1.  At this point I begin to think the problem may run deeper than a driver upgrade.

It runs fine in D3D8, and looks a good deal better than , but from what I gather, most development is now aimed for OpenGL, so that's best to run it in. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, running XP Home with an ati radeon x300 mobile (I think that's all the specs that matter.) I was going to get ati catalyst 6.7 (which i'm guessing has higher than 1.2) but the test proggie said my setup wouldn't be supported. So... any advice? I've looked around on the boards and couldn't find much.  It's not the end of the world, but I'd like to play in OpenGL if possible. Please help.

but it doesn't say how he solved it... I hate and love computers, for all the same reasons.

Did you remember to actually open the launcher and click the browse button at the top in order to actually change the build it's using to 3.6.9 RC 6?

Re: Longtime, upgrading player has a few questions...
yes, i tried both RC6 and the light_test build, same problem. I did select them, each in turn.

*edit: Well, I feel utterly stupid. If I had reafd 4-5 threads down isntead of just using the search function I could have got my answer without bothering anyone. For the record, I was using 16bit color depth in my monitor settings, while trying to play in 32bit. 3.6.9 r6 now works in openGL. Thanks again. now about those environmental builds...  I think I'm done breaking things upgrading for now. Time to just wait for my joystick so I can finally play FS2 as it was meant to be (and even better actually, thanks to scp).  :)
