Howdy, I've got some newbular questions about fs2_open...

Before you kill me, I have been doing a lot of reading of karajorma FAQs - which has been very helpful.  That said, here's stuff I still had the nerve to bug you about.  :D

1. I'm just starting trying out various versions... the stable, the fixed, and the bleeding-edge experimental  :arrr:.  I've been completely uninstalling & removing FS2 (except for my Pilots) rather frequently.  Is there a safe & lazier way to swap fs2_open versions?  I am running FS2 w/ 1.2 patch and no mods, except for the MediaVPs folder where I keep fs2_open packs.

2. I've got pilot A for FS2, and I've got pilot B for fs2_open 3.6.7.  Can I use pilot B on 3.6.8 & 3.6.9?

Thank you kindly,

Stephen

p.s., completely blown away to see the graphics in fs2_open.  And I'm just totally jazzed to see so many people out there that love this game as much as I do.  Great work!

Checklist for Freespace 2 Open on Windows:

  • The Zeta Media VPs, available here
  • A 3.6.9 RC, or CVS build like this one
  • The mp-710 patches, get both files here and here and if you use the advanced effects VP, here

Also, make sure you have the following:

  • Recent OpenAL release, available here
  • An okay graphics card, available at your local computer store, also available at Newegg
This might be inaccurate, but these should be pretty close to bleeding edge

2. I've got pilot A for FS2, and I've got pilot B for fs2_open 3.6.7.  Can I use pilot B on 3.6.8 & 3.6.9?

As far as I know there's no reason not to, just don't use it with all of your mods

Then you'll really like the 3.6.9 RCs with the Zeta Media VPs  :D

...questions answered.  Thanks Mars!

You don't need to uninstall an old version of FS2_Open in order to install a new one. Simply deleting\moving the media VPs (but not the standard ones, only the ones that begin with mv_ ) is enough. You don't need to delete the old builds even except to keep things tidy.

In fact although I rarely mention it one of the main reasons I had everyone go over to putting the media VPs in their own folder is precisely because of this. If you have 3.6.7 and want to try out 3.6.9 you simply rename the mediavps folder and make a new one.

Then you can try 3.6.9 normally but run 3.6.7 as a fallback simply by picking that build and running the renamed mediavps folder as your mod.

Gunnery Control, commence Plasma Core insertion! OPEN FIRE!

:welcome:

Welcome to Hard Light Station, Ensign.

The exits are scattered around the station, but most of them have jammed shut because nonextinct usage, and those that work only go to vacuum, so your best chance to get off is to wait for a service ship to pop in. Last time is not remembered, though.

We are currently suffering from technical disruptions from time to time, which may cause the lights go out at any instance, and sometimes even the basic life support fails for some time. At these times, stay calm and composed; for these cases the station system automatically drops a computer from the roof above you with FSO installed and ready. They have independent power sources.

It is adviced you don't roam around the station at these times, because you won't be seeing anything because the lights are out, and it's possible you don't want to meet our resident Shivan, Carl. He usually lives in the air duct system, but at the times of these technical problems he crawls out of he has been reportedly sighted on other parts of the station, too. In case of chance encounter, give him your lunch and you may be let to live. Other wildlife in the station include our group of monkeys. Don't be troubled by them, they usually behave themselves.

There used to be flamethrowers in the station, right below the seats, but some while ago the station adminstartion decided to fill them with Holy Water instead, and this effect can be noticed as every discussion considering, some certain things automatically degenerates into a debate of religious matters and how they should be applied to society. It is adviced that newcomers monitor the situation from a distance; they cause possibly volatile situations sometimes.

Against military hazards, there are plasma rifles in racks around the station, but they can only be opened by an Admin, :v:, or Hyperintelligent Shade of Blue.

On latest news, the Command has agreed to tow the station into a less volatile system in order to prevent further power shortages, as they are belived to be caused by subspace disturbances emanating from nearby star in our current system. The GTD Gamewarden is supposed to rendezvouz us upon journey and stay with us in that new system of our placement. This transfer operation may cause yet another power shortage for some time in the immediate future, but it should make life in the station easier in long run.

Enjoy your stay at Hard Light station as long as you will.

Oh don't whine, you have had much more opportunities for it than I - just look at our post counts...

That was my kill. Besides, I have to practice my welcome speech from time to time.

I just swapped the .EXE's was that wrong

It's not wrong unless you're using builds that are very different and want to be able to run them both.

martellato was talking about changing between builds like 3.6.7 and 3.6.9. Now while the 3.6.7 VPs might work with 3.6.9 the reverse is definitely not true. If you're never going back to 3.6.7 you can simply delete the old build and exes and swap to the new one but if you want to test out 3.6.9 before committing to it then you can use the method I described.

There isn't really any reason to use 3.6.7 at this point anyway. That was a buggy version even for its time and it's almost a year old now. Get the latest 3.6.9 RC instead. The pilot files should be backward compatible, as far as I know.

I agree but the ability will become more important after 3.6.9 is released. Because then we'll have development CVS builds as well as the stable 3.6.9 one and there will be people who need to run both.

karajorma, thanks for that info... keeping things tidy like you described will definitely make it easier for me to test different builds.  Thank you, btw, for your FAQ site... it's huge.  And in time I hope it will help to hide my n3wbishness on the forum, and in so doing protect me from outlandish and inflamatory remarks about my newbyness.

Speaking of outlandish and inflamatory remarks about my newbyness...
Yes, Herra Tohtori, that was a good kill *grrrr*.
Though I must admit, I do appreciate the formal tour.  Oh, and I just bumped into Carl today.  I offered him my bologna sandwich, but I'm afraid that it didn't please him at all.  He much prefered my right leg.  Oh well...
