Re: What do you want in a campaign?
In addition to most of the stuff posted already, I have a few more things to add.                                                    1. Give the campaign characters and not just random people who die all the time. Examples of campaigns that have this are Derelict, Sync, Homesick, Revenge, and Transcend.
2. Give the player a character that is not a mute. Examples Transcend, Revenge.
3. Add some creepy stuff to some of the missions like in Transcend. I loved the spooky nebula missions.
4. An origional plotline.

Re: What do you want in a campaign?
Well Snail for example doesn't like player/speaking characters.Sometimes the player has a role,of course an NTF pilot would be pleased to destroy a civilian transport ecc. but you see the messages an dthink that they come from another source.
I can't believe that many people want tragedy like endings for campaigns.Well,I would like such an ending in FEP,but in general I prefer cool endings. The final "mission" in Sync is a typical example of bad ending, but I think it's minimalistic and strange, with the player sorrounded by Shivans while they take care of the other Allied ships...

Re: What do you want in a campaign?
One of the things I'm toying with is to give the actual feel of being a squadron commander by having various additions to the command briefs; people in the squadron sending him mails about various things, talking to the destroyer captain and the aerospace group commander, stuff like that.

The problem is I have to make all the player's decisions in that respect for him.

Regarding defeats, I think the thing is that the official FS campaigns are two-for-four in Pyhrric fashion. Operation Templar and Silent Threat were decisive victories, but the FS1 and FS2 campaigns were victories with heavy cost.

I tried such kind of interaction, but for different purposes.

You're right,a campaign needs some defeats in the plot, making Alpha 1 unable to interfere with the Fate.

Re: What do you want in a campaign?
I like great storylines. Even moreso than heavy action shootem up. For me, A lot of the fun playing fs campiagns isn't for the action but for the storyline of it. To see where it all ends.

Why I loved Transcend so much. Such detail into the plot. I noticed a lot of people complained about the copycat missions It and sync had. For me, Those copycat missions played into the atmosphere and storyline and thus made me enjoy it more.

I've played some campaigns where it was heavy action with just tons of fighters and caps ships shooting beams at each other and some of the most random
Those were the ones I never finished :/

You don't need to just toss in the shivans at random just because they are "there" and you need something more to shoot at so they just randomly show up and for no reason have a luicifer with them. Thats one thing that a lot of people need to learn to do right. Adding shivans to their campaigns just to have a new bad guy where they show up out of nowhere with a whole fleet for no reason..

I know what thing I never want to see in a campaign again. I no longer remember what the name of it was but it had a mission where it made you be a slow bomber to well... bomb a ship then it had you turn around and guard some transports against fast fighters.

Thus, You had two wings of bombers with about half of them gone or hurt badly trying to fight off faster normal fighters from unloading hornets at your escort.

it was the single most retarded thing ever trying to stop and dogfight in that piss poor bomber with mostly heavy missiles and he had us outnumbered.

Worst mission ever.

Well,on the other side ITDoH missions have potential vut lack on design... RTB directives, for example, are not correct...
