Can't find a definitive solution for the white squares
Hello all
I'm very new here but have been playing Open for a while. Recently I started to play the Transcend campaign with the recommended OpenGL graphics, (up until now I had been 3D8). I was absolutely horrified to find the engine glows, warp effects etc replaced by white squares.

I have done a clean install of Open following the nooblist
http://www.geocities.com/turey_the_king_of_the_universe/nooblist.html
and after searching HLP for a solution I can't find a definitive answer.

Please help a noob out.

:welcome:

Welcome to HLP! Exits are to the right and left. In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. Flamethrowers are conviniently located under your seats, however, due to the recent funding cuts, a $3.5 million donation is required to obtain a flamethrower with a full load of napalm in it. If you do not wish to make a donation, your flamethrower will remain filled with water. If you don't wish to donate and still want a working weapon, you'd have to try the weapons locker. However, only HLP Admins, a :v: God, or a Hyperintelligent shade of Blue can open the lock, so you'd have to break in. If you find yourself inside a ventilation shaft and you catch a glimpse of a Shivan, you don't need to worry... much. It's just Carl, and you have two choices with how you want to deal with him:
    1. The first possible course of action is getting one of the weapons from the afore-mentioned weapons locker, and trying to ward off Carl by threatening him with the weapon. Be advised that many of the weapons in the weapons locker are covered with the blood of people who thought it a good idea to break into the weapons locker and use the procured weapon to ward off Carl. So, please, if you decide you want to choose this course of action, choose one of the already-bloody weapons, so you don't get blood all over one of the clean ones.
   2. Your second course of action when you see Carl is to throw your lunch to him and hope he isn't hungry. This is the better option.
As a final note, please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by Freespace Fanboys. Your trampled remains will be fed to Carl so that the rest of us don't have to carry around so much food for lunch.

Oh wow. Someone actually used my list. *in shock*

just a few questions so I can help you better.

you know the launcher? the one where you selected the Transcend folder for the mod? Could you run it and go to the features tab? I'd like you to post everything in the first box, as well as the contents of your mediaVP folder (just in case).

Also, try running in D3D for a little bit, just to see if that changes anything.

EDIT: Also, try running without the mod to see if it's a problem in the default campain as well.

OK, in the launcher it says:
C:\Games\FreeSpace Open\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod Transcend,mediavps -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting

The vp files I'm using are mv_core, mv_effects, mv_models, mv_music and mv_textures.

I ran it in D3D and it works normally except it doesn't fade or black out at all when its supposed to.

And unfortunately the white squares still appear in a normal campaign.

Hope that helps :p

a bit. Could you try running it both with and without the MediaVP's enabled? I want to find out if it's a Media VP problem.

Yep the white squares still appear regardless of whether I'm using the vp's.

Re: Can't find a definitive solution for the white squares
White squares on effects is normally caused by the fact that the graphics weren't loaded (can't find the file, or it considered the file invalid).  Run a debug build and attach/link your fs.log file.  If it is missing effect graphics though, you'll probably get debug popup warnings about it when you first run the game.

How recent are your display adapters drivers?

Re: Can't find a definitive solution for the white squares
Nothing in the log stands out as obviously wrong, but I'd recommend switching to 32-bit color in the Launcher and see if that makes a difference.

Re: Can't find a definitive solution for the white squares
I was just thinking could...
OpenGL Vendor     : ATI Technologies Inc.
  OpenGL Renderer   : RADEON 9800 x86/SSE2
OpenGL Version    : 1.4.4054 WinXP Release
...be the reason? OGL 1.4.4054 ?

Anything down to 1.2 is supported.  It's much better if you have at least 1.5, but it's not required.

That is an old driver version though.  Upgrading probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

Re: Can't find a definitive solution for the white squares
I've noted for the AGP 9x00 series though that the 4.12 drivers are possibly the most stable one's for that generation, which will give you "OpenGL Version    : 1.5.4776 WinXP Release".

If you have any problems finding the 4.12's I have the drivers, control panel and control center (CCC requires .Net though)along with the last version of R3dTweak before they switched to .Net. PM me if you want them.
