- Affordable
- Makes calls
- Does text messaging
- Has some kind of scheduling or important time announcement thing. I commonly use my cell phone to keep track of tests, events, and so forth.

Much preferred:
- Transfers easily between service providers.

Optional:
- Can link to another mobile device via bluetooth to provide internet access.

Or basically a flexible cell phone that's cheap, and doesn't try to be a camera, mp3 player, etc etc. I remember reading about a phone that was pretty much this, but wasn't being sold in the US.

Sony Ericcson, K510i for an all-round good phone for under a tonne, (£100) with bluetooth & IR, and animated backgrounds, MP3 player, adds reminders and calender, can synchronise with your PC appointments via blah blah, has USB cable too.

^No expandable memory though

Its got a phone finer too, I like Motorolas, But Sony are equally usable/packed with Gubbins.......

Stay away from RAZR's. Nothing but problems on 90% of the units.

But I doubt you wanted one anyway. It's the iPod of cellphones.

Depends on your service provider but the LG AX390's pretty good.  It does exactly what you'd like it to, has the capabilities to play and do things other than what you've said, but it's basic.  It doesn't have expandable storage. but my sister has loaded a lot of stuff onto it just from the download service we get with alltel. 

One important thing though, if you don't live in the city, more out in the boonies or something, this phone has Analog capability.  More and more phones are dropping the Analog capability in thier phones, meaning if you're on the road and can't get digital service, you have a fancy shmancy calendar and alarm clock in your hands now.  Out where I live here, Analog is a MUST.  There's a lot of areas just barely outside of town that only have coverage with Analog towers.  It's pretty much the only phone I see from Alltel that does Analog, and all the stuff you're looking for, for 19 dollars on a 2 year brand new activation.
