Yet another computer thread...
So, I've got a problem. My mp3s love renaming themselves. It's driving me insane. I've done numerous scans of all kinds, no spyware or viruses. I had this problem a year ago, and I ended up formatting my computer to get rid of it. I'd like to avoid doing that if at all possible.

Whatever MP3 player you are using (iTunes?) has the option enabled to rename and organize, most likely. Check your MP3 program's settings.

Re: Yet another computer thread...
I'm using Windows Media Player 10. My symptoms are quite simply renamed mp3s. Windows seems to disagree with my naming conventions. It'll change "Artist - Song" to "Artist-Song," and sometimes it'll rename the songs completely. I've checked the options, and I haven't noticed anything about the program renaming and organizing files. Also, the folder that contains all my music is constantly set to read only. No matter how many times I try, it always reverts back to it, but none of the mp3s seem to be set to read only.

Re: Yet another computer thread...
Something along the lines of 'Allow WMP to organise my music' is the Library options, IIRC.

Ah, thanks. After scouring the options and consulting the help file, I think I've got everything fixed. Damn Windows Media Player. I suppose I'll give Winamp another try. It hasn't impressed me in the past.

Winamp is an awesome "just plays music" kind of media player. It does have video abilities but I have it and use it for music only.  You have quite a bit in the way of customizability and its memory footprint is fairly low.  Its the quick and dirty versions of things like iTunes and Media Player.

I did quite enjoy Amarok on SUSE Linux and wonder if there is a Windows version...

You could always try Foobar 2000, It's free, powerful and has a low footprint. It doesn't have any fancy shmancy Skins (GUI), just a plain windows box arrangement, but it plays almost any musical format. I personally prefer Winamp tho!  :p ;)
